DEJA VU FOR THE FIRST FINISHERS
OF THE 31st ANNUAL MAUI MARATHON
SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2001
The first to finish last year's Maui Marathon were also the first
to finish this year's race held on Sunday March 18.
Greg Wenneborg of Tucson, Arizona won the Maui Marathon for the
second time in a row, finishing first this year with a time of 2:27:55, a
little slower than his last year's run of 2:26:38. Erika Csomor was again
the first female finisher, setting a new course record with her time of
2:39:59. Last year the Hungarian national marathon champion from Budapest
finished first in the women's division with a time of 2:53:36.
In the men's division Roger Busch of Maui finished second with a
time of 2:29:15 followed by Zoran Bursac of Beograd, Yugoslavia with a time
of 2:31:22.
Second place in the women's division went to Lisa Blomme of
Honolulu with her time of 2:48:48 followed by Tammy Slusser of Monroeville,
Pennsylvania in third place with her time of 2:51:37. The first Maui woman
to cross the finish line was Chantal Ratte of Kula and her time was 3:27:30.
Bong-Ho Lee of Kailua-Kona was first in the wheelchair division
with a time of 1:48:37, followed by Ron Amundson of Hilo in 1:55:10 and, in
third place, Randy "the Animal" Caddell of Kailua-Kona in 2:03:43.
More runners than ever in the 31-year history of the race, 2,715,
participated in the 2001 Maui Marathon. There were 1,455 female
participants and 1,260 males from 44 states and 19 countries.
The Maui Marathon is the oldest continuously held running event in
Hawaii and one of the oldest marathons in the United States. Ranked number
9 in North America by the "Ultimate Guide to Marathons," this 26.2-mile
course which begins at Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului and finishes at
Whalers Village in Kaanapali, is also recognized as one of the ten most
scenic marathons in North America.
