The Blackhorse Association, in conjunction with the Fort Irwin Directorate
of Community Activities, is hosting the 21st Annual Blackhorse Marathon at
Ft. Irwin on April 24, 2004, beginning at 7:30am.
This year, participants have the opportunity to compete in a full marathon,
marathon relay, half marathon, 10K and 5K races. All proceeds will support
the Ft. Irwin community.
Hajime Nishi, author of the Ecomarathon Data Book and “Losing is Winning:
The Joy of the Slow Running Philosophy” will be participating in the event.
Mr. Nishi began running marathons in 1990. Since 1995, he has campaigned
for what he calls “Ecomarathon” – supporting ecologically friendly running
events. He also promotes a novel approach to running, which he calls the
“Slow Running Philosophy”. In 1997, Mr. Nishi ran a marathon on each of
the 7 continents in just 7 months, for which he holds a Guinness World
Record. In 2000, he became the first non-North American resident to run
marathons in each of the 50 US states, plus Washington D.C., and in 51
countries. Mr. Nishi’s short-term goal is to enjoy running 500 marathons
in 100 countries by 2010. Further, he plans to enjoy 1000 marathons in 250
countries by 2049, before celebrating his 100th birthday. At 55 years old,
the Blackhorse Marathon will be Mr. Nishi’s 338th marathon.
