FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FITGER'S 5K REGISTRATION OPENS TOMORROW
2009 Field Capped at 1,500
(Duluth, Minn.) Online registration opens tomorrow for the 20th annual
Fitger's 5K Run & Walk. To sign up for the Saturday, April 18 event,
runners and walkers should log on to www.GrandmasMarathon.com beginning at
9 a.m.
For the first time, the Fitger's 5K registration process is being conducted
exclusively online with paper entry forms no longer being printed.
Those interested in taking part in the event should also be aware of two
other important changes that have been implemented. The 2009 field is
limited to the first 1,500 and there is no race day registration.
"We feel that the 20th anniversary of this special event is the appropriate
time to make these race improvements. These changes will enhance the
experience for our participants," says Scott Keenan, executive director of
Grandma's Marathon.
The race, which drew a record 1,355 registrants last year and 934 in 2007,
begins at 9 a.m. on East Superior Street in front of Fitger's and travels
through downtown Duluth and Canal Park before finishing back at Fitger's.
An awards ceremony and post-race celebration begin at 10:30 a.m.
The entry free is $25 with all net proceeds benefiting the Young Athletes
Foundation (YAF), a Grandma's Marathon program that focuses on the
promotion and development of youth athletics throughout Carlton, Cook,
Douglas, Lake and St. Louis Counties. Since its inception in 1990, the YAF
has contributed more than $325,000 to area nonprofit youth athletic
organizations.
