New Grandma's Marathon Event Set for March 15
Saint Fennessy 4K to Benefit Young Athletes Foundation
(Duluth, Minn.) The first running of the Saint Fennessy 4K is scheduled for
Saturday, March 15 at 9:30 a.m. in Hermantown. This new event - hosted by
Grandma's Marathon - is an untimed fun run and serves as a fundraiser for
the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF).
The Saint Fennessy 4K has been created in honor of longtime Grandma's
Marathon friend Don Fennessy, who passed away in 2011. Fennessy was an
original member of both the Grandma's Marathon board and Young Athletes
Foundation committee, and was inducted into the Grandma's Marathon Hall of
Fame in 2004. Don's wife, Ella, who was also well known in the Twin Ports
running community, passed away in May 2013.
"We are excited to add this race to our lineup for 2014. It is an ideal way
to pay tribute to Don and his Irish heritage, and to also celebrate the
kickoff of the spring running season," said Grandma's Marathon executive
director Jon Carlson.
The event is limited to the first 500 participants who register at
http://grandmasmarathon.com/site/index.php?page=saint-fennessy-4k. The
entry fee is $25 and all net proceeds benefit the YAF, a Grandma's Marathon
program that focuses on the promotion and development of youth athletics
throughout Carlton, Cook, Douglas, Lake and St. Louis Counties. Since its
inception in 1990, the YAF has contributed more than $600,000 to area
nonprofit youth athletic organizations.
The race will begin at Hermantown Elementary School, travel along Arrowhead
and Lavaque Roads and finish near McKenzie's Bar & Grill in the Hermantown
Square.
Prizes will be awarded for the best Irish attire, with additional prizes
and other post-race festivities at McKenzie's Bar & Grill. Shuttle bus
service will be available free of charge from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for
those wanting transportation between the finish area and Hermantown
Elementary School before or after the event.
