I ran the Nike Women's Half Marathon this year for the first time. I've run 17+ marathons and more than 20 half marathons and I have to say this was the quietest and most lonely races I've ever run. The Expotique is all about women connecting and marketing of Nike iPods. Their marketing worked extremely well because when it came to the race, most of the women (except TNT) were wearing their iPods and I couldn't connect with anyone. It was so quiet at times all you would hear was the runners' shoes hitting the pavement. For me, this is not what racing is about; I like the social aspect of it. With everyone wearing their iPods it seemed like everyone was in their own world with their music with only the TNT coaches and runners cheering for their own people. I enjoy striking up a conversation with several people during the race, learning where they are from, etc., and cheering them on as I run the course. In this race, I'd try to talk to someone and there was no response.

On the positive side, the scenery was spectacular, just expect lots of hills. The expo lacked GU, fuel belts, hats, sunglasses, everything you normally see at a marathon expo; but the race was well organized and it has one of the nicest finisher's medals you will ever get. The finisher shirt was also very nice. It was a good race to run once, and if you are TNT, you will have fun.

I agree with whoever said that next year, this race should be renamed the "TNT Marathon." If you aren't running with the TNT cult, don't plan on getting any support or sense of camaraderie. Not enough water or Gu around the lake. Second half of the course is disappointing. Despite my disappointment about the race, the Nike Club Run SF training was awesome. I will do the training program again, but will probably run a different race.

Fantastic way to see the highlights of San Francisco. Only negatives are the lack of expo and poorly designed post-race area. Spectators were allowed into the refreshment area. Long line for the bus back to Union Square, but it moved quickly. Definitely on my calendar for next year

My necklace was presented by a short, bulky, overweight guy stuffed into a tuxedo, who probably should have run the marathon with us runners to get into better shape! Oh well, so much for the myth of the "tall, handsome guy" giving out the Tiffany necklace!

"Ok for first-timers, not for competitive runners" (about: 2007)

This was my 13th marathon and would not do this one again.
Issues:
TOO many walkers - seemed like after the full/half split, well over 50% of participants remaining were walking.

If you are NOT TNT do NOT do this race. TNT fans only cheer for TNT runners/walkers and this race seemed to be ALL TNT people.

Expo (?) - if it isn't Nike/iPod, it isn't there. Not a single vendor - no Gu, no socks, no clothes. Manicures and other "girly" things - but not an expo like any other race.

This is not the place to try to run a good time, or to be competitive. This is a very heavy walking race and full of first- (and probably last-) timers. Course is full of women wearing iPods and talking on cell phones. A little too "girly" for me.

I ran the Nike Women's race for the first time this year. It was a great course, beautiful views, challenging hills, and plenty of aid stations that were well stocked. The spectators were few and far between, especially after the half split off from the full group. There were A LOT of team in training people there. If you aren't one of them they won't cheer for you. Just be aware of this. I expected a sparse crowd and lots of team in training people so it didn't bother me too much. The Tiffany necklace and finisher's shirt were great. The post race food left a little to be desired. Overall I had a great time and would do it again.

Fantastic race. I've run other marathons such as Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and this was the best experience that I've had in a marathon. The camaraderie among women runners in the race was just amazing - I really did not know what to expect in my first women's race. On a side note, I saw a few male runners behaving badly - or rather the way they might in a race with men and women: running dangerously close to people as they are passing, being a little rude about it, etc. But overall it was well run for a race this size. The lake portion of it could have used an extra water stop - but by mile 21-24, I'd drank enough water to get me back to the great highway where more water was available. Great race, I'll try to run again next year.

"Nice course, limited fan support" (about: 2007)

After finishing Chicago two weeks ago, I knew I needed something more so decided to come out to San Francisco. The first half the course was great - nice and cool unlike Chicago. Felt like a good city race but way too many walkers! Perhaps it will be beneficial to have a walking lane to the right? Very frustrating. The aid stations seemed far apart but perhaps it was just me. There were many areas where there we no spectators and when you did see spectators, they stood there silent waiting for the one person they knew to run by. Kind of a let down after running Chicago several times where the fans are incredibly enthusiastic. The second half of the course was a bit brutal running along side the road and then competing with the area residents during their leisurely Sunday morning strolls. The expo was average. I tried to by energy gels there but they didn't have any?! Thought that was odd that they didn't have a vendor to sell things but had plenty of samples. The race was well organized and seemed to run itself. I thought the finish line was actually quite manageable for a race that size. I easily found my family afterwards, which was a nice change from the chaos you can expect in Chicago after the race. The weather was great, the course interesting and the race was well run. Probably wouldn't do it again though. Once was enough.

This was my first marathon experience, and I ran the half as a member of TNT. I thought the race was awesome-the scenery, the finish line goodies, the volunteers, etc!! I'll admit that it was a little bit frustrating getting stuck behind groups of walkers/slower runners, but what else can you expect with 23,000 participants? As far as the expo, I went on Thursday afternoon hoping to beat the crowds, and it sounds as though I made the right choice. In addition to the smaller crowds, they also had some perks that apparently weren't offered on Friday and Saturday such as wine and cheese, drawings for Tiffany's earrings, etc. Being as this was my first marathon and having nothing to compare it to, I thought it was fantastic, and really appreciated all the small touches geared towards women. I think it's a shame that there are always going to be people that find fault in EVERYTHING~I thought it was a great race for an even greater cause!! I enjoyed it so much that I have already signed up to do another half with TNT~I hope that I won't be disappointed in a different race!

For a first time 1/2 marathoner, I found this experience to be one-of-a-kind. I loved it all - the energy at the expo, the picturesque course, the energetic crowds. Thank you Nike, TNT, and San Francisco for creating an amazing event!!
