"Race was extremely well-managed. Very pleased!" (about: 2007)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first 1/2 marathon and of course I did it for the necklace! I was totally happy with the management, the incredible volunteers, the helpfulness of everyone including the Team in Training people who helped everyone regardless of whether they were with the group or not, the first aid staff, the refreshments and the awesome finish! You all deserve a GREAT BIG THANK YOU! I had the time of my life! Will come back again and again if I'm lucky enough to get in!

I agree with the comments made regarding the 2nd half of the marathon route. Definitely needs some rethinking. I love any and all support from the spectators! The finish line area is the worst of the bottlenecks of the course and I noticed that it caused a great deal of anxiety and stress for my family and other spectators as well, and brought out the worst in some marathon staff as they tried to "manage" the crowd in such a small amount of space. A more appropriate amount of space is paramount to the future success of this race and should be given top priority in the list for improvements.

"Great Experience with TNT!" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

This was my first Nike Women's Marathon, and first one with Team in Training. I was glad to have all the TNT support, but am sure that those not running with TNT felt a little left out.

I thought the course was great. I actually enjoyed the hills, and the first view of the ocean with runners covering the coastline was breathtaking. The second half (down the Great Highway and around the lake) was pretty boring, but by that point I was more focused on my body and mind than my surroundings, so it didn't bother me. They were nice and flat at least.

Support was definitely lacking around the lake. They need to move the mile 20 aid station back a bit and add another one around 22. These are the hardest miles of the run, and no water?! I didn't take the chocolate at mile 23, either. I was very glad I carried my fuel belt with me; I would have likely slowed down a lot around the lake without it.

I consider myself a pretty average build, and the finisher's tee fit me perfectly in a medium. Such a nice change from getting a baggy men's large, like at the end of most races. I came in at 4:43:01, and there seemed to be plenty of all sizes of shirts left.

Other than the waterless miles 21-24 (or so), the water stations seemed nicely spaced, and always well-stocked. I didn't need a port-a-potty any time after the start, and brought my own gels, so I didn't take any food on the course.

It was a little obnoxious to navigate the walkers in the first 4 miles or so, but it seemed to thin out quite a bit after mile 4 or 5. I PR'd by 11 and a half minutes, and got a great split bracelet on the marathon website.

I'm not really big on marathon expos, so I really only went for the packet pickup (which was very efficient at 9 am on Saturday). Niketown was crowded and out of many sizes by Saturday morning, but 5th floor of Macy's still had plenty of sizes, and even styles I hadn't seen at Niketown.

Overall, I really enjoyed this race, and am glad I did it with TNT. I don't think I will do it again, but would certainly recommend it to friends.

"Great Marathon-Better if done with TNT" (about: 2007)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon and I did it with TNT. I had no expectations about the expo, the course, etc. It all seemed great to me. The support was awesome, with groups all over the place to cheer you on. The course was great, with oceanfront, hills, and flats, with the exception of the 'dead zone' around Lake Merced. The part where you least want to finish is where the most support should be.
On the flip side, due to injury, I walked the majority of the course, but did the early start. I made it before the sweep, and actually finished. But, the timing chips 'stop'(???) after a certain time, so now I have no final 'offical' time, other than my own measurement. I would have done better not to complete it? That's fairly insulting after all the training we did. I didn't mind the fact all the amenities were gone, but at least give me credit for the accomplishment.
Will do again, but would like an improved timing system.

"Beautiful course but all else could be better" (about: 2007)

3 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I enjoyed the course a lot. It was beautiful and challenging. I ran a PR and feel great about it. However, this race could be so much better. The expo was extremely disappointing. Even local marathons in cities much smaller than San Fran manage to have better expos. The selection of Nike gear was also surprisingly limited in availability, sizes, and colors. The post-race area was chaotic and also seemed more interested in capitalizing from the spectators than athlete support. Other things such as water/Gatorade, spectators, and overall organization were average. I'm glad I did it (and trained on lots of hills to prepare for it) but I wouldn't do it again.

11-50 previous marathons | 4-5 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons

This is a magnificent race. The atmosphere of a women's event is great, whether you are a novice or experienced participant. The course is gorgeous, the "medal" - what can you say?! And the nice touches like Coat Check mile and Chocolate Mile - how fun! I wish more San Francisco residents would come out and cheer, especially around Lake Mercer; but we can always focus on the scenery. The crowd was much tighter this year and even as a race-walker, I had trouble getting around slower runners and walkers for the crowd. But I'll be back!

"Inaccurate Chip Time?" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Has anyone ever had their chip not work? Three of us started together and finished together - yet one of us had a time of 2:02 and two of us had a time of 2:07.... We timed it on our watches and we were 2:02 as well, but I think the chip started recording at the official start as opposed to when we started (5 minutes later). Did I not stomp on the pad hard enough? Is it normal to have technical issues?

In any event, what a treat this was. I don't have any complaints (besides the inaccurate chip time) because my only expectation was for me to get my "post preggo" booty in gear and the half marathon was really a reward. It was so frickin' gorgeous up there - wow oh wow. Hope to do it again next year. Loved the spectators and volunteers... such wonderful energy.

"Great race that could be improved on" (about: 2007)

4-5 previous marathons | 2 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

This is a really fun race that I would recommend for a first time marathoner or half marathoner. Not a great place to try for a PR (hills, crowded course, limited room to pass walkers/slower runners), but it is awesome to run with 23,000 women. Team in Training has a huge presence at this event, but the coaches, mentors, and spectators cheer on and help ALL runners. Like other runners, I agree that the Lake Merced section needs to be revamped. In general, the overall logistics of the race are good. Nike could improve the experience by focusing on the details. Runners come back to races where they feel like they were treated well and got good value for the long hours of training. Nike is not quite there yet, but this year was an improvement over last year.

It was my fourth marathon in San Francisco my ninth over all. I keep coming back. With Nike helping the LLS we will always be a winner. To have so many people gather for a event is 'GREAT'. We are not athletes but women and men that have great nephews and wifes, husbands the list goes on that have died from Leukemia. Thank you Nike for doing a great job.km10/23/2007

"The best race for my first and last marathon!" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon

I flew across the country to participate in the NWM (not with TNT). The race course was beautiful. The support along the way was fantastic! I was motivated and inspired by the runners and walkers that finished the race. But, I will say that that when you have 20000 people registering, checking bags, picking up bags, lining up at the start there is bound to be confusion and I was ok with that. I have to agree that the Lake Merced portion of the course seemed under supported (a little boring compared to the first 13miles) and sun was high and hot by the time I reached that portion of the course. After the beauty of the first portion of the course its hard to get excited about a lake! :-) I did not enjoy walking so far after the race to get my bag although I appreciated the opportunity to have my things held as well as the changing tent. Overall it was a WONDERFUL experience one I will never forget!!! Oh - Thanks to the lovely 1/2 marathoner that let me have her GU when I dropped mine on the course!
