COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I truly enjoyed this race even though nature forced us to run in 35-degree weather at the start. running the entire Strip was awesome, although the second half took us out to a less scenic route. Nonetheless, I would run this again. Here are a few pros and cons. Pros: * I like how my wife could run the half marathon while I ran the full. It gave option for the whole family to enjoy. * Plenty of food at the finish. * Probably the most spectacular start I've ever run in: 15 minutes of fireworks, two white tigers in their cages, a Celine Dion look-a-like singing the national anthem, and some showgirls waving us off at the start. * Good Boston qualifier. Flat course. Cons: ** Expo was big (good thing), but a little crowded. ** For the last .2 miles of the 26-mile race, there was no spectator support due to running behind the Mandalay Casino. They had to avoid the possible congestion due to four-plus hour runners. ** It didn't affect me since I was in Corral 1, but it took people over 40 minutes to cross the start line. Overall, this was another successful race by the Rock 'n' Roll series. Thanks! | |

"Good first-year race" (about: 2009)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 As the first R'n'R Las Vegas race, everything went pretty well. The course was much nicer than I expected, as the mountain views from 13-20 were great. The clock time at each mile was wrong, as I was actually under the "official" time instead of being over by a minute or two. The chip time at the end of the race was correct. It still made for a lot of math during the race. The worst part of the race was going through the end of the Strip in the early miles. The weather was really cold - at the start it was 34, and it didn't get much warmer than 40 for the entire race. Still, I was able to get by in shorts, a short-sleeve shirt and gloves. I started in the second corral without having to fight to get up there. Having the half and full start together might not have been the best idea, though. The last six miles are mostly downhill, which made for a fun way back toward the Strip. Water station support from miles 13-26 often only had a couple people giving out water or Cytomax (AKA battery acid). While not a big deal, it meant that you had to get your own water. The medal was very cool, but the food after the marathon was horrible. Some fruit and bagels, with no recovery drink. There was also no separate area for marathon finishers to get food. Fan support was strong along the Strip, but there wasn't much from 13 on. It was too cold, so I can't really blame people for not wanting to be outside. I heard the spectator viewing options were very limited after the Treasure Island turnoff (mile 10.5). You really need a car and know your way around Vegas to see the runners. I will be back next year for sure. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 Being in Las Vegas and running the first 10 miles on the Strip are the only reasons to run this race. The weather wasn't kind for '09 (34 degrees at the start), which led to ice in a couple of the drinks I was handed in the first few miles. They had no control over their wave start. Chicago has "bouncers" at the entrances to their seeded corrals. Not the case here. A lot of people were well ahead of where they should have been. Also, they just randomly decided when to stop people for the "waves." While there was a pretty good number of spectators on the Strip, there was next to nobody on the western out-and-back portion. The other negative to this half was the 500-foot climb over it. Like all Rock 'n' Roll events, they have bands along the course, but several appeared to have chickened out from the cold. Several stages were empty, with either some recorded music playing or nothing at all. I didn't care to stick around for the concert afterward, since it was still really cold and I didn't care for either of the bands. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Las Vegas 2008 was about my 65th marathon. I loved the new course and the fireworks at the start were over the top! The course was flat and fast. The cool weather made it a perfect day to qualify for Boston. My only complaint is that the marathon and half marathon should start 5-10 minutes apart to avoid the usual congestion. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 I have run several half-marathons, and this was very disorganized and disappointing by comparison. First, what was with the crappy puke tan COTTON t-shirt with the 1970's Las Vegas logo on it? For the $100 I spent, I would think, at the very least, it should have been a tech shirt in a decent color. The start line was chaos. Everyone was trying to cram in at the start line. People were filtering out of the back of the Mandalay Bay into the start area, and it was a huge bottleneck, with only about an 8-foot wide opening to cram 10,000 people through. People were just climbing over the fences. It was nuts. BIG complaint: there was no runners' etiquette whatsoever. For a race of this size, there need to be start corrals, because leaving people to work off of the honor system clearly doesn't work. I am not a fast runner, but I'm not a turtle and I do run. I spent the first 2-3 miles weaving in and out of walkers, groups of walkers, very slow runners, etc. I am all for people getting out there and participating at any fitness level, but have some respect for others around you. If you know you will be walking the course or if you can't make it running even the full first mile, then start at the back of the line. I cannot emphasize this enough. It is rude and disrespectful. I finally was able to get into a pace around mile 4-5. I absolutely loved the first half of the course down the Strip, but the last half was kind of boring running along the back side of the casinos. There was a smell of sewage for a couple of miles... YUK! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 Course: How often do you get to run down the Strip? I think running down the Strip (~6 miles) was great. The rest was weak. It was flat and fast, though. Organization: Weak. I would have liked to get a technical shirt for the money. The top 20 runners were promised tickets to the Bodies exhibit, but we never heard back from them on that. Weaving in and out of half-marathoners over the last 4 miles sucked. Spectators: Besides the 3 drunks who had just stumbled out of the Imperial Palace, there were few spectators. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 Very poor race organization in 2008. The expo was bad, the starting line was a mess, it had a very boring course, the shirt and medal were a joke, and the finish line was a real letdown. It was easy to tell that this was the last year for the organizers. This race could be a lot of fun for a destination race - if they do it right. |
