COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I agree that maybe they fibbed a little on the course. The rolling hills did get old after awhile but there were none that would break your heart. The road surfaces were a little rough, but this country may have to get used to that. Keeps you on your toes. The police were the best I have ever seen. At one intersection the woman police officer was dancing to keep warm and singing encouragement to the runners. The packet pick up was easy. The host hotel was the best - very helpful and an easy walk to the start and finish line. The hotel had free water and fruit when you came. Last but not least were the bands. The music on the course was a lot of fun but the "Elvis" band at the finish had everyone dancing. The harmonica and Elvis glasses in the goody bag were a lot of fun too! If you want to do a "back to back," this and Mobile are the way to do it. Only a 230[mile ride between the two cities. A lot of Fifty Staters and Marathon Manics did them back to back. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 So, I had read the comments from years past about the hills, but was totally unprepared for them. It was a great race to run. There were good spectators, and the police were pretty good. Some of the roads were pretty beat up. But again, the hills KILLED ME!!! If you are planning on running this race, make sure 2 of your training days involve hills. Also, the organizers could have had more info on the locations of the miles so that friends/family could meet the runners there for support. Overall, I recommend this race. JUST BE PREPARED FOR THE HILLS!!! (Have I made myself clear?) | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Congratulations on another successful race! I love the cotton t-shirt and finisher's medal. The expo is small but very nice. The music was great! The whole race is very well organized and the volunteers are terrific. The Blues Crawl was a big hit. I did not see the Blues Crawl schedule on the website; this would have been helpful. The post-race party was terrific, with plenty of food, music and beer! If you're going to run a race in MS, I strongly recommend the Blues Marathon. Seems like it keeps getting better each year! Great job!!! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Not too big, and not too small. Lots of out-of-towners, which made it interesting. Weather was perfect. Medal was awesome. Entertainment post-race was excellent, as were the refreshments (including beer). Roads were not all that great and the hills were very challenging. The engraved harmonica and Blues CD in the goody bag were a nice touch. At the finish I would have segregated the lanes much earlier and a little more entertainment on the course would have been nice. All in all, great experience. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Great job by the organizers of the race. Terrific race swag, including a nice harmonica, Elvis glasses (complete with sideburns) and a great medal. I would have preferred a technical shirt rather than cotton. The course is a hilly challenge. The fans and volunteers were excellent. I will definitely be back. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I've run all four of the MS Blues Marathons. It's grown into a great race. Not too big; not too small. Starts and ends downtown, with a handful of rolling hills. Nothing too steep, but Mississippi is pretty flat. I think they found every hill in the area, and put the course over them. Overall, a very nice race. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Yes, it's hilly; yes, it's challenging; and YES, IT'S WORTH IT! I did this race as the first part of the double in conjunction with the First Light Marathon in Mobile. I loved every minute of it. Extremely well organized. Easy parking. Great atmosphere. Well manned and supplied aid stations. TONS of volunteers at every turn. And talk about a MEDAL! Holy moly, the medal is awesome - plus we got a t-shirt, bag and CD. Can't thank the City and people of Jackson enough. GREAT JOB! If you need MS, this is a must do! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 My first marathon. Pretty hard course, from what everyone says. Just under 700 runners. Crowds were small, but were also very encouraging and very friendly. I even dropped a GU pack, and someone ran out, got it for me, and ran it to me. The medal is cool - big and heavy. I would have preferred a tech shirt instead of the cotton T-shirt they gave us. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I ran the half marathon and this was about my 30th half or full. The good: -Friendly volunteers and spectators -Well organized expo -Nice medal -Post-race food The bad: -Short-sleeve cotton t-shirt -Little communication after race signup -No clear marks for aid stations on course map -Tough, hilly course and the roads were terrible (almost as bad as New Orleans) -No organized pasta dinner... the food and service at the Marriott was awful -Jackson is dead on the weekend. Nothing is open downtown. Overall, the race was enjoyable and the Marriott was convenient (near the start/finish). The people are fantastic and make you feel welcome. The hilly course wasn't as big an issue for me, but the road conditions seemed to beat my legs up. Also, if you ran on the edge there was a definite decline. If you are trying to run the states, then this is the best race for Mississippi. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Yes, this year we lucked out tremendously. A winter blizzard of ice and snow hit Jackson within 24 hours after the marathon. God smiled on us. The starting temp was about 35 and the finish temp around 45. Sunny. Windy : 5-10 miles an hour, and it seemed to be more in your face until the last mile when I could feel it pushing me. Perfect PR temps! I could run forever in temps like these! I ran the inaugural marathon (2008), which had a flatter and more boring route. This year the race directors changed it to go through mostly residential areas - along tree-lined streets with houses ranging from small ranches to palatial 10-acre mansions. It's hard to find good scenery in the dormant wintertime but this route was as scenic as possible and made the marathon interesting. However, the road camber (mostly from right to left) was a problem. My left hip began to hurt, but the pain is gone as of Monday. And I thought the race organizers thoughtfully highlighted the rough spots on the roads. Did not see anyone fall. So you trade a flat, boring route for one that is much more beautiful, although more cambered. The hills seemed relentless but balanced the quads and the hamstrings well - and, after all, we are marathoners, aren't we? I would make only four suggestions: 1. Start the half-marathoners about 10 minutes behind the marathoners. 2. Give a tech shirt. The design was beautiful, but most runners don't wear cotton anymore. 3. Give a map of the course and location for parking in the handout. 4. Think about a pasta dinner. Many marathons this size encourage a school to provide and staff it with net proceeds going to the school. Great camaraderie for the marathoners. And start it early, at 5 p.m. The harmonica, a wonderful packet gift, was absolutely delightful. I only hope my wife can get a good set of earplugs when I get home. Thanks, Mississippi, for a memorable marathon!! |
