"Very nice course, enjoyed the choir" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Compared to most races I've run, I enjoyed the Flying Pig. The course was mostly flat with negligible hills in the Eden Park area around mile 5-6. Crowd support was excellent although somewhat scanty in the mile 13-16 area. Organization was impressive...no complaints. It was a little warm in 2001, but that was hotter than usual. I would definitely recommend this marathon to others.

"Great Course and Overwhelming Support from Fans!!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon. Ran it with my two brothers and had a blast. It was more fun and challenging than I had imagined. The organization and ease to participate were comforting. The crowd support really gave us the mental encouragement needed for such a grueling race. There was plenty of water/gatorade, power gels, fruit, etc. along the course. This is definitely a race for the family and friends to show their support and encouragement. This is a must for the first timer or the experienced runner. Definitely a yearly run for myself, family and friends. See you at the Finish Line! : )

"Great first time race!" (about: 2001)

Great race, great town. This was my first marathon. I ran this race by myself, but never felt like I was alone on the course. The spectator support was terrific. Be it a church choir or garage rock band, Cincinnatti really turned out for this race. I will definitely run this race again!

"Excellent Marathon, great support from community!" (about: 2001)

This was my very first marathon, and what a wonderful experience!! I ran this marathon through the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, and they were a tremendous support as well. I think the neatest part was all the support that the city of Cincinnati put into it. Each and every street along the rolling hills was full of residents who were cheering us on, handing out water, clapping, and providing support. I thought this would probably be my first and last marathon, but after finishing this one, I'm hooked. Count on me to be there as long as the old knees hold out. Hats off to Cincinnati and the Flying Pig Marathon organizers and sponsors!!

"Great Experience - Thank You Cincinnati!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my 2nd marathon - improved 25 min over my first, the 2000 Marine Corp Marathon. I had a lot of fun. The city is full of warmth and made me feel very welcome. I especially appreciated the encouragement from the spectators and the frequent fluid stops, I needed every one (spectator AND stop). The early start keeps the race temps lower. The post race reception is great with lots of food and music. Thank you Cincinnati Bell for offering free phone calls home for runners. The medal is clever - it gave me a laugh when I received it. Overall this was a rewarding and positive experience for me. I felt so great I spent the afternoon at a Reds game just enjoying the moment, the city, and the accomplishment. Before flying home Monday I picked up a paper - all runners names were listed in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Cincinnati shows, with its actions, that it fully supports this event!

From start to finish this was a great marathon. Great organization, excellent fans. Great finish and super course. Highly recommend this marathon.

"Tough but fun" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This was my first marathon, and overall it was a very positive experience. I must disagree with others who were very entusiastic about the crowd support. While there was good crowd participation in the downtown and eastern suburbs, there were whole stretches of the race where there were virtually no spectators. For example, miles 12 - 16.5 along Eastern Street was very sparsely populated, as was the stretch between about 19 - and 23 through the less than visually appealing industrial / decrepit western part of the course. That's about 9 miles altogether with almost no crowd participation. That was my only gripe. Don't get me wrong, I loved this race. The hills from miles 4-7 should be no problem for anyone who has done any hillwork. The bridges at the end are not as large as the hills at the beginning, but are tough all the same since they come in the last three miles. I loved the Eden Park, Hyde Park, Mt. Lookout part of the course, tons of crowd participation and a beautiful area. The finish line party was fun, and the medals were very cool. I would recommend this race to all runners, just be prepared to be alone for chunks of the race.

"Bring home the bacon!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was the third annual Pig, and it was great! The hills went up 350 ft. between miles 5-7 and down 350 from 7 - 12. The new course was very scenic, including that last @*&! bridge before the finish. Water/Gatorade stops were plentiful and they had orange slices and Clif Shot in the later miles. Great speakers, pig medal, and messenger bag as goodies. They even had 'Flying Pig Lager' at the finish feed. My only gripe is that the finish to start return shuttle was hard to find. Very nice race - bring home the bacon!

"Flying Pig Rocks" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

My third Flying Pig and it just gets better every year. The best organized, best run, best of everything. Course changes were ok and believe they're going to leave it this way. Tons of support, amazing array of on-course entertainment. The whole city turns out. There are very few places in this city that you run without someone telling you how great you look. Expo was a little hairy navigating but you get a lot of cool stuff. Khannouchi and Bill Rodgers were there this year doing seminars and autographs etc. Your whole family can have a blast the marathon weekend.

A Runner from St. Louis Mo (5/9/2001)
"Good race, good lodging, good support." (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

Good race, interesting course, particularly in the Eden Park area and crossing the bridges. Downtown hotels are within close walking distance to the convention center, and the start line. They are farther away from the finish, but still within walking distance. I think the walk after the race helped me loosen up again. It was pretty warm but water/gatorade stops were frequent, no problem staying hydrated. There's very little shade on this course, especially the last half so if you're slow like me you might get a little warm.
