The course was good and the fan support was excellent. There was water and Gatorade every mile or so, with an awesome medical staff on hand to treat any problems that you had. Great race and plan to run it again next year.

I must say that this has been the most challenging. The course was hilly, but not boring. The only complaint I have is that the corrals were not large enough to hold the appointed runners. I am so glad that it rained. Otherwise I think the heat would have been bad. The best part was approaching the 25th mile and the band was playing "Hang On, Snoopy, Hang On". It was so motivativating. Thank you Nashville for a great race. Now I'm off to California!!!
Mark Williams from Zionsville, IN (4/26/2004) "Appeals to half-marathon & locals" (about: 2004) 4-5 previous marathons \| 1 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 I hate to say this, but this was not the marathon we were promised. Course was NOT flat, compared to those I had run previously (Des Moines, Charlotte, Grandma's). Most of the people in the race were in for the half marathon, and it seemed like they just left the marathon people out on their own. Didn't hear/see most of the bands, but that could have been due to the rain. Worst thing of all that will keep me away in the future was the packet pickup at the expo. Having limited hours (until 6 on Friday) and having to stand in a line longer than a Disney ride, it was the worst organization I have ever seen. It makes it nearly impossible to travel in from other states by limiting the packet pickup time. I love Nashville and the people were great, but overall, I can't recommend this race to other runners.

L. from Seattle (4/25/2004) "Rain, heat, humidity = fun time" (about: 2004) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Well organized race. The weather between 5 AM and the race start was terrible: blinding rain. Unfortunately, with no cover at the start, we were all huddled under trees. The race inexplicably started 30 minutes late. After the race, we found out that this was due to lightning in the area - they were really looking out for our safety; I just wish they would have told us while we were waiting. Maybe they did... I don't think they understood that the PA system didn't reach 90% of the runners - except, oddly, during the songs. Tip for any race organizers reading: if there's a huge delay to the start AND your runners have been standing wet and cold for two hours, please abridge your starting activities. At CMM, we had to endure a) aerobic dancers we could see but not hear, b) a so-so rendition of God Bless America, c) lots of speechmaking (which most of us could not hear anyway), and d) the anthem. Cut this to the anthem and let us go. Or at least have some people troll through the starting corrals and tell us why we're waiting! All that aside, the race was very well organized. Fun entertainment and a nice course. I was told that even though they had rerouted the course this year and removed some hills that it would be plenty hilly. There were hills. But for those of you who have done a few races, don't be scared of CMM's hills. They aren't THAT bad. This is one of those races where they only have sports drink every other stop... but there were fluid stations about every 1.5 miles, so this wasn't a problem. The first official Gatorade stop (the second station overall) mysteriously didn't have sports drink, though they did have Gatorade cups. But after that, all stations were as advertised. Lots of first aid stations. Several spots handing out orange slices. The end was well organized. The food was pretty lame for such a big race (bagels, bananas, oranges, muffins, fruit-in-a-cup, water), but it was better than some races. The medal is cool. The shirt is pretty dismal; no better than you get at your local 5k. Parking and shuttles all worked well. Overall, it's a good 'destination race', especially for people that are new to marathons. The community really gets involved... lots of spectators, especially once the weather cleared. Be aware, though, that they start the half and the full at the same time from the same place. The first few miles of this race are insanely crowded (like many big races). It clears out after about 7 miles, once you pass Music Row. The half marathoners split off around mile 11 (I think), and it isn't crowded at all after that. BTW, there's lots of stuff to see during CMM. However, unless you are from Nashville or perhaps have taken a tour, you won't know many of these sites as you run. Music Row, for example, is just a nondescript set of office buildings with a bizarre and all-too-anatomically-correct statue.

The cheerleaders were wonderful supporters and the bands were awesome. Even the people who lived in the path of the marathon had their music blasting for us and cheered us on! Not to mention the excellent scenery of Nashville!

C. from Atlanta, Georgia (4/25/2004) "I did not like the new course" (about: 2004) 3 previous marathons \| 1 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I thought that the course was very unmotivating due to the fact that you were constantly going back and forth. It was also difficult to run the first several miles because the road narrowed very quickly and the runners had not yet broken apart. Miles 20 to 24 were not exciting and with very few spectators. This is a shame because this is the time during the race that the runners should be hitting their last high. I did not like consistently passing people and having the only orange cones to separate the runners going in opposite directions. (Twice I saw runners running into one another because they were only divided by a cone.) The weather conditions were not ideal, but that is something we can never control. I also felt that there was not nearly the support and amount of musicians as I had expected. I am glad that they removed the 'big' hills, but I don't feel that the course was redesigned all that well.

Not only is it a great way to see the city of Nashville, but the support is awesome. I'd go back again, definitely.

After the experience, I don't think I'll ever want to do a small marathon. The band stages, the support and the crowds were fantastic. We had our names on our shirts, and everyone cheered for us. Even though we were in the back of the pack, water, music and fans were still on the side of the road, helping us out! Can't wait to go back in 2004 and see the new course!
