"Very Nice Small-town Marathon - 'Pancake Flat'" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This was my 43rd marathon and probably the easiest! This was the flatest course I have run. Also - the 8 loop format ensures that approximately 30-40% of the race is run on the very forgiving Asbury Park boardwalk. The lightweight hat at the finish was a nice bonus, however, I was looking forward to the 'Tilly' finisher medal. (The finisher's medal was fairly plain). Support was fantastic,Gatorade and GU at all water stops. The DJ was great!!Weather was beautiful and sunny and in the 60's. (I forgot my sunglasses but was able to purchase one at the beach shop on the boardwalk.)

"Great little marathon but room for improvement..." (about: 2010)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 The setting is probably it's selling point. We DID have great weather to run the Jersey Shore Boardwalk - looking over the ocean for 70% of run is hard to beat! Host hotel: awesome that it is RIGHT on the start and 100 yards from the finish. PLUS, they offered 5 p.m. check-out. I've NEVER had that generosity from a hotel. It was great to shower before the 13-hour drive home without paying another day! THANKS SO MUCH! Expo: reminded me of a 5K. Three volunteers and one other runner in the room. One table of nutrition samples - not staffed. They couldn't find my registration. Hand-wrote my bib. T-shirt had Sharpie "bleed through" marks on it when I unpacked it later (thankfully they washed out). Aid stations were adequately stocked but kind of poorly staffed. NUMEROUS times, when I ran by, the volunteers were texting and sometimes standing in front of the table so we had to reach around them to grab a cup. Is it too much to ask for them to hand it too us? Spectators: some were wonderful and sat to see us through 7-8 laps. Not all shoppers were tolerant of us running by the shops and restaurants: "Oh, like you OWN the boardwalk!" (They coned-off only 1/4 of it for us, which left more than enough space for all). Post-race sounds like it was a little better than '09: water, apples, bananas, and half-bagels left getting dry and hard in large, paper grocery sacks. Plenty to go around when I got in just under 4:30. Overall: I love the hotel and the setting (I would have liked a longer loop/fewer laps on the boardwalk), but pre-/post-race stuff needs improvement. Plug for your carb load: Siculiana's on the boardwalk. Chicken Capri. GREAT meal!

"Great Race" (about: 2010)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The weather was perfect and there were many spectators. The course was 8 laps and included a scenic section of the boardwalk. The fluid stations were well placed and well stocked and manned. The volunteers did a really good job. Running around 8 times didn't feel monotonous and made the course seem fast. I highly reccomend this course and will be back next year!

"Great NJ Race!" (about: 2010)

| 1 Asbury Park Relay Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a relay marathon with an option to run the full thing as a "team of one," which is what I did. The weather this year was beautiful (maybe even a little warm at the end), the location is fantastic, and the race was extremely well organized and managed. It's a flat course, but there was a bit of headwind at times for a little extra challenge. The distance covered 8 loops around Asbury Park, with about half of each loop along the boardwalk. There were two well-stocked refreshment stations roughly at each end with water, Gatorade, GU gels, and even M&Ms. I can't say enough good things about the volunteers (big thanks!). And, to top it off, after 26.2 miles there is absolutely nothing like taking off your running shoes, walking down the beach, and dipping your legs into the cool Atlantic.

"Great 8 loop course; scenic ocean boardwalk" (about: 2010)
6-10 previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I did the full marathon - great 8 loop course with fabulous support and scenic ocean views, with the course on the ocean boardwalk. Small marathon numbers add to "down home" friendliness and support. I would recommend this course.

"Great new marathon" (about: 2009)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Asbury Park Relay Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This will be a spectacular marathon on the lucky years that marathon day gets good weather. In 2009, it was windy, rainy, and chilly. The terrain is flat and fast, but you run the course eight times over - perfect for a relay, and a little bit monotonous but surprisingly bearable for the full marathon. The race organization is superb, and adaptations were made for the unfortunate weather we had this year. There were two aid stations on the course with water, Gatorade, gels, etc., and they were more than sufficient. Enthusiastic volunteers manned the stations. There were a few hardy souls out along the course cheering, as well as enthusiastic course officials, and lots of folks huddled at the transition point/finish line, encouraging the runners in Convention Hall. In a good year, the course will be perfect for spectators to cheer their runners. The medal was representative of Asbury Park, showing "Tilly." We received a nice tech shirt, a hat that I've actually worn, and a pair of gloves.

"Turn the course around" (about: 2009)

| 1 Asbury Park Relay Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This is a great place for a group of people to spend a weekend and run a relay marathon. It could also be a great marathon course if the direction of the course is reversed. Even without a nor'easter, the prevailing winds are usually out of the north. So have the runners go south on the boardwalk and work their way north through town where the wind isn't as bad. The 10 a.m. start allows anyone from 150 miles away to travel there that day instead of having to stay overnight.

"Has potential to be a great marathon" (about: 2009)
50+ previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I ran the full marathon and felt pride in finishing the full 26.2 in the windy, cool conditions we had. The race director was out working the course and did a great job making the best out of the hand he was dealt with the weather. Smart move to move the transition area inside. I got quite a lift running through there each lap... got me pumped to face the wind waiting for my as soon as I exited on the other side. The marathon started at 10:00, which is what was advertised, so I don't have a problem with that... other than the fact that the host hotel's late check out was 1:00. So, unless you could run a 2:45 and zip right over to the hotel... the late checkout did you absolutely no good. SO... start the race earlier and contract a later checkout time so runners could actually go back and shower before leaving town. The two water stops were plenty... but one of the stops had just one person working it most of the time. I felt sorry for her. She was super friendly, but was working her tail off trying to fill cups of water and also hand them to runners. Why there weren't a few more people to help I don't know. Most of my laps I just stopped and grabbed my own off the table. BUT... it would have been nice for her to have some help. The finisher medals and hats were nice and the shirt was good. There was very little as far as refreshments for the marathon finishers, and I finished just a bit over 3:15. I just noticed a few bananas and some kind of fruit drink. Hmmm.... not much to refuel with, especially if the drink wasn't to your liking (not a typical post-run drink that you would be used to?). Again... for a first-time marathon, not bad! You have a good foundation to build on. Good luck.

"A very good multi-loop marathon." (about: 2009)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 Asbury Park Relay Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Race Director Art Castellano and the New Jersey Road Runners Club put on a very nice marathon. I suspect a lot of runners do not realize that although it is a "relay marathon," runners can run as individuals by registering as a "team of one." The eight-loop course is flat and fast, and if you have friends/family that would like to watch you run, they can see you 16 times by moving no more than 50 meters. In addition, two strategically-placed aid-stations provide you with 16 opportunities for Gatorade, water and more. The weather did not cooperate on Sunday, but the race was still well worth running. |
