This is an enjoyable nice sized race where you don't have humongous lines to everything. The organization was great, the volunteers and the aid stations well placed and a nice experience overall. The course is urban standard with the second half heading out along the river and back. The second half is also tougher with the hills and the heat. An earlier start (7 AM) would be much better so that the heat later in the day has less impact. Pasta dinner at the Clinton Library is a nice touch. The expo is nice and fair sized but having been to a few now, the feeling of déjà vu is strong. The medal is definitely an eye-catcher... good contrast with the HP Houston Marathon medal from January. An eminently worthwhile race.

"I expected more hills!" (about: 2005)

I expected a lot of hills. Not that I am disappointed, but I expected more. I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of police support, the lovely neighborhoods and fun people. I will do this event again. The hotel shuttles worked flawlessly for me, and I had a car and could have driven if they did not work well. Never once thought about driving (well Sunday night, looking for a drink, I drove as the town had rolled up its sidewalks after the post-race party). For a newer race it was unbelievable! I have seen few better races, and they have been around forever and cost a small fortune. Good expo, great people.

Great event!
Great finisher's medal!!!
Fun people.
Excellent shuttle service from the hotels.
The perk tent was worth every penny!!!
Loved the big uphill!!!
Loved the neighbors on the hill!
Okay, we had to go back down the hill...
Saw all the city, the good, the bad, and the ugly. A real city race!
More lovely homes than I expected, fewer hills
fun runners, the governor was entertaining and I met a new friend from my area that I will try to see at other marathons.
Everything worked well this year.
I can't believe that this isn't a race with 30 years of lessons learned. It just worked!

Little Rock did all the little things so well that one tends to forget about the course. The expo was well organized. There are some big sponsers that are missing out on being there. The pasta dinner and Clinton Library a great evening. The after party would have been fun but I was in need of something to sink my teeth into by then so I passed on the finger food. Great job by the organizing com. and all the supporting players.

"Fun & Challenging Marathon!" (about: 2005)

This marathon was terrific because of all the wonderful people supporting and participating in the race. The course was very challenging; especially, at the hill at mile 24, but the last 1.2 miles was all down hill to the capitol. The day warmed up quickly from 45 degrees at the start to 70 degrees, which added to the challenge; but well planned water/Gatorade stations kept me going!

I give Runner's World a thumbs up for making The Little Rock Marathon, "One of the Best Small Marathons." Also, The Democrat Gazette's Monday Lifestyle training articles were terrific source of information about the race.

This was an amazing race! Even though I got injured at mile 16 and had to walk the last 7 miles, it was well worth it. The course, although super challenging because of hills and the heat, was beautiful. The spectators were not as numerous as at other, bigger city marathons, but were amazing in their care and concern for runners. I would recommend this race to anyone. It was one of the most superbly organized and well-run races I've done. A+ all the way.

"A great mid-size marathon" (about: 2005)

I went to Little Rock based on the comments made on this website, Runners World, and the size of the finisher's medal. Nothing failed to impress.

LR Marathon is a wonderful smaller race. The organization was top-notch. I signed up late and had no problems. The expo was just the right size. Though they did run out of the 'What hills?' t-shirt. The perks tent was a nice touch... pre-race food (bagels, coffee, and fruit, none of which I can eat before the race) and a massage to loosen up as well a row of porta-potties. I would highly recommend it only a small up charge.

As for the course, I found it very challanging; miles 13-17 were like one continous ascent. The aid stations at every 2 miles and one every mile after 20 were flawless. The last 1/4 of the couse through the park was a little dull but I found it kind of relaxing, with sparse spectators cheering you on. The last hill at mile 25... what a heartbraker.
The specators were very supportive, especially during the uphill portions. Not having been to a super marathon, i.e. New York, Boston, Marine Corps, I don't know what it's like to have spectators every step of the way - which is fine by me.

I ran with the Gov. of Arkansas for a time without knowing it. Everyone along the way was wishing him luck and cheering him on. I asked how it was that everyone knew him. He said, "You're not from Arkansas, huh?" Whereby I told him I was from Texas, a republic to itself. This is the part where he tells me he's the governor, and I feel like an ass...

The finisher's medal is huge, the downtown is easy to get around, the river walk is great for tourists, the Clinton Library is a plus. Hotels recommended by the LR Marathon website cater to the runners - at least mine did.

Other marathons should take a lesson form Little Rock.

At the pasta dinner they projected a movie of the course on a huge screen that you could watch while eating at the Clinton Library. Then they extended their hours to tour the Library and only charged us half the usual fee. The perks tent before and after is awesome. The sliced oranges and bananas throughout the course hit the spot. Families walking out of church next to the course carrying signs and posters to urge us on and wish us well, even though we are disrupting their morning. I was moved and inspired. After the marathon we got a beautiful finisher's T-shirt, and hot pepperoni pizzas. The Hotel Clarion happily gave us a 3 o'clock check out! And the final little touch was the First Family of Arkansas participation in the marathon.

1. Expo, free downtown parking, pasta party just great
2. Medal heavy duty and super size
3. Plenty of drinks, fruit and such for us slowpokes.
4. Lipstick and Chanel equ de Toilette at mile 25... wow did I look great for my finish photo
5. Post party... drinks, shrimp and chocolate desserts... you are really spoiling us marathoners
6. Hospitality and spirit of Little Rock community: priceless

Mr. Mason's 915 W. Capitol Avenue right down the street from the capitol. Greatest barbecue... stop by.

Hills were just fine. Wish end miles out in the park could have bands or some distraction for the marathoners.

The city of Little Rock and the marathon far exceeded all of my expectations. It was a great race and host city. The weather was absolutely perfect, the course was very scenic, and the organization was superb. The kind, enthusiastic and polite volunteer staff were wonderful!!! The hills were challenging but it was all worth it when we finished in front of the state capitol. Great race, I will recommend it to all of my friends.

"fun run if you've got the time." (about: 2005)

I thought the course was very good and the support along the way was great. Really not too hilly and you get to see the two cities fairly well.

I thought the events around the races were disappointing. My wife and I worked hard to break away from home to come and participate; as well as, boost the local economy. We had to take care of jobs, kids, pets, and parents. By the time we arrived, the 5:00pm time line had passed. We were able to pick up our numbers and shirts; but not the goody bags. Otherwise we would have had to get up early in the morning, ride the trolley to the start site, get back on the trolley to go drop off our packets at the hotel, and get back on the trolley again to make the race start time.

Also, I'm not sure what the function of the host hotel was. They would not give a check-out time extension. Neither the expo nor the packet pick-up was there. The start/finish area was not close by.

The post-race party probably was great. However the 5:30 pm start time limited attendees to those living close by or retired.

This is a great race to enjoy Little Rock and its friendly people. It seems best-suited to people who have lots of time to get there early and leave late.
