COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 If the first thing you do when you get up in the morning is to pop a blue pill; if you've run barely 6 miles in the last 2 months; if you have a brand new pair of trainers, with which you ran the aforementioned 6 miles, then today is not a good day to run a marathon, unless of course it's Vegas. The start was much warmer than last year, with temps around 4-5 in real money. The Blue Man Group did something at the start but I'm still trying to figure out exactly what. I think it may have been the worst rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that I've ever heard.... Fireworks filled the air as we started and the fountains at the Bellagio were stunning in the pre-dawn light. Then the sun came up to warm things up, but clouds rolled in to stop it from getting too warm - perfect! The half marathoners split from us all too soon and it was so tempting to follow them to the finish but the crazy people kept going. The course was straight and true, beautifully flat, with an occasional gentle rise or fall. There was even some rain, but I think meteorologists would call it a "trace." Halfway came around so very quickly and then it was all "downhill" to the finish. The last 10 miles were like a waking dream. My legs felt like they were turning to jelly at 19, so I took a hit of some GU I was carrying and all was soon right again. The last 3 miles were down Frank Sinatra Drive and I think they were the toughest 3 miles I've ever run. I finished up at 4:50ish, 25 minutes off my best time, but it was a great course on a perfect day. Amazing. Vegas, you are the best. I love you. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 4 The MOST important requirement of a CERTIFIED marathon is accuracy, I would think. The mile marker concern to the Devine group shows how much they desire to draw an elite running group. "It'S VEGAS!!!," a rep told me; I guess that mean's gimmicky is the goal. Joke of a shirt, medal not much better (both great last year). You can have excuses the first year of a race, but this is the 2nd, so there's no excuse for their disorganization. Have NEVER whined about a marathon set-up (have run 18), but had to say something. Will more than likely not run here again... too bad. Great course and good fan support. The old Vegas Marathon had it straight, and I miss it. This just seems like a money grab. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 This was my 22nd marathon and its right at the bottom for organization. Mile marks were horrendous and water stops werent consistent. Sometimes water 1st and Gatorade second, and other times vice versa. Cheap t-shirt, no food at finish, and an expensive entry fee to go along with a flight and motels. Needs to improve a lot for me to come back. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 The mileage markers were so completely wrong I tore my pace band off. Why carry the excess weight? Gu was promised in 2 locations - only one on the course. Water and Gatorade were on one side of the street only, which caused me to miss drink stops. There were no food or drinks at the end of the race. If there was a post-race party, please tell me how it went. They just don't get it. The race director just sent an e-mail out explaining how next year there would be food because they plan on keeping the families and friends of the runners out. Please charge everyone ten more dollars and let me celebrate my accomplishment with my friends and family at a post-race party (with a band) at the finish line. Oh, nice shirt too. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 The 2006 New Las Vegas Marathon did not live up to its billing. Right from the start, there was no one directing runners to the starting line, or the nonxistent corrals for that matter. I witnessed several runners scaling a chain link fence in order to make it to the start. The start was billed as "the gun goes off to Elvis and fireworks." That must be for the elite runners, as it was at least 15 minutes after the fireworks that us non-elites got to the start. Another case of catering to a few at the expense of the many. Also, why weren't the hotels' big screens used to at least let us non-elites see the Blue Man Group?! Lack of corrals led to increased risks for injury as slower runners and walkers are in the front of the pack. There is just no excuse for this for a marathon of this size. Obviously Devine Sports lacks the expertise to manage a sporting event of this size. All this and we haven't even left the start line yet. The first third of course is fun and exhilarating, but this isn't due to race organization but rather one being on the famous Las Vegas strip and Freemont St. Aside from that one might as well be running in one's sleep. Aid stations were only adequate. While water and Gatorade were available, it was difficult to get to at times. The much-hyped fan support must have still been in bed in the city that never sleeps. The t-shirt for participants is a joke. The only thing funnier was the lack of any meaningful kind of finish line activities and party. They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. This is one event that can stay in Vegas. I will not attend again. The money spent for transporation, lodging, food and marathon was not worth the event. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Runners beware; Devine Racing has a habit of making the same mistakes over and over again. True to their usual form, the mile markers for this year's version of the New Las Vegas Marathon were all off the mark. Cheap t-shirts were given to the participants, and virtually no post-race food was provided. The Blue Man Group entertained only the elite; the rest of us could not see or hear what they were playing. Aid stations were undermanned. With the rise in the number of entries, one would think that Devine Racing would make the effort to obtain more volunteers and provide better amenities. This was my 84th marathon, and without a doubt the organizers of the 2006 New Las Vegas Marathon (i.e., Devine Racing) did the worst job putting on a marathon that I have ever experienced. I will not return if Devine remains in charge. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 It started at the expo when no one could tell me what colors on the race bib corresponded to which corral. Finally a Las Vegas track club member was able to help me. It continued at the start when Devine put all Las Vegas track members in the VERY FIRST CORRAL regardless of their pace!!!! Now let's talk about the mile markers. There was no way to pace yourself with these markers, if you could see them. Not only were they way off, but they were also positioned right beside the water stations. I never did see the first mile marker, nor did any of the people around me. At the 6-mile mark, a runner beside me had a Garmin GPS that said only 5.35 miles. At this point in the race, I decided to give up on trying to figure out what pace I was setting. Ditto regarding the $3 t-shirt given to the half-marathoners. This was far from a "world-class marathon." There is so much possibility for the location. Blue Man Group was awesome, as were the fireworks. Also, running right down the strip is a great experience. Step up to the plate, Devine, and really make this marathon world-class. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Where were the mile markers? I never knew my pace because I would run 5 minute mile and then 15 minute mile. Also extremely discouraging to not know mile 24 from mile 25 - they were off by at least 0.5-0.7 mile. Other than first 6 miles, the course was rather bleak, seemingly running through the worst neighborhoods of Vegas. No water at the start. Spectators were blocking the way, so I had to jump barriers at the start. No food at the finish. Very disorganized. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Agree with the previous post about mile markers. There were clocks at every water stop but the water stops weren't anywhere near the mile markers which were painted on the road. Every single one was off. The start was chaos. There were no instructions in my race packet as to parking, sweat check, or the starting area. Food at the end was pathetic. No Gatorade at half the water stations. Chaos at the water stations. No attempt to organize runners by pace. I used the shuttle service to park. One hour before the race I was the ONLY one at the shuttle parking area? Why? No one knew about it! If you want to run Las Vegas, do the half marathon if you can stomach the cost. At least you get to run down the strip. That's sort of cool. But that's it. I ran this race last year as well. Last year wasn't as crowded because there was no half marathon. I thought they'd be better with the organizational aspect. I was wrong. I won't run it next year. BTW, FYI this course is 'flat' but it certainly isn't level. Running 8 miles into a very strong headwind and going steadily uphill was very taxing. |
