"Not so organized & where's the food?" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 I will agree that the first 8 miles or so were GREAT! The spectators were fabulous while running down the strip! We even got to see OZZY! Then into some very boring neighborhoods for the rest of the race. Now let's talk about mileage. Miles were not marked properly. At Mile 15 you could see Mile 16. Passed Mile 20, and then I swear I missed 21 and was heading to 22.... Got to 21 and was so bummed out. It took me almost twice as long to get from 20 to 21. After running 26.2 miles, don't you think some replenishment besides more water and Gatorade would be nice? Come on people! My $100 registration could at least afford some bagels or a beer. It is Vegas, where there are 3 or 4 buffets in each hotel. The medal is GREAT. I was also disappointed with the shirt. Last year's shirt I heard was a wicking shirt... while this year's was a light blue cotton. :( Don't think I'll be back unless the organization and course improve. This was my 5th marathon and my most disappointing... as far as organization. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 The half-marathon is very level. Too bad both races had to finish the last several miles running beside stalled traffic. My asthmatic lungs were lucky to get through it. My partner sounded terrible when she had finished the marathon. Also, I was VERY disappointed in what little food they had to offer at the finish. We have a four-mile race in the spring here in Kansas City that has so much food it is astounding. And the entry fee for that race is a fraction of the cost of Las Vegas. Once was plenty for this run. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 The race expo was well organized, although I was there the first day and did not receive a Marathon Guide Booklet. I was back at the expo on Saturday and got one, but there was not much info in it. The start area of race seemed to be well organized with plenty of portable potties. The race started 10-15 minutes late - and thus we were still standing around when they shot off the fireworks over the Strip. The course was flat - scenic in parts, especially the first six miles or so along the Strip and areas where you could enjoy nice views of the mountains. The crowds were sparse except for the first mile and the last 1/2 mile, although the spectators that were present were very supportive. The volunteers throughout the course were very friendly and were simply awesome!! I ran the full marathon, running the first six miles with my wife (who was running her first half marathon). We participated in the "run-thru" wedding chapel ceremony at the 5 mile-mark to renew our wedding vows. By the time we got back on the course - after a 35-40 minute delay, since everyone got married in one ceremony - we were running with the 5:30-pace-and-over runners, but the water stations were still well stocked. My only complaint about the organization of the race is with the clocks on the course. Many did not seem to be at mile increments; rather, they seemed to be placed randomly at or near water stations. I am pretty consistent on my splits, but there were several "miles" that were way off. Additionally, the clocks were often hard to spot (since they were on the ground) and not all of them were marked with the mile number. It would be great if in the future the clocks were at 'official' mile marks and located off the ground with something to catch your attention (i.e. balloons). The other recommendation that I would like to make concerns the wedding/vow renewal ceremony. It might be a better idea to have the minister do a quick "run-thru" ceremony for each couple as they arrive at the chapel, so that the running couples are off the course for only a short period of time. Instead, we were required to wait until all of the couples (approximately 25) arrived at the chapel, and the ceremony (although very nice) was a little bit long, especially for those of us renewing our vows. Overall, I think the organizers did a great job and I would recommend the NEW Las Vegas Marathon to someone looking for a fun run! | |

"Less than spectacular" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 The race starts on the strip just outside of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The start was chaotic. There were no corrals or separation between runners and walkers. As a result, the runners had to weave through walkers while trying not to get tripped up by the discarded apparel and trash bags people shed. The race continues up the strip and through Fremont Street. This marks the 10K and the end of the most interesting part of the course. The remainder is spent running through the streets of suburban Vegas. The race ends back in the south parking area of Mandalay Bay. The post-race party is later that night at the Venetian, which is on the opposite end of the strip. This was my first marathon. My wife and I enjoyed the experience overall, but we just don't know if we'd do this one again. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Problems I had with this race: (1) At the expo, you had to wait in a very long line just to look up your bib number so you could pick up your race packet. Why not just post it on the wall or send a confirmation card? (2) The mile markers were either nonexistent, hard to see, or in the wrong place - so if you didn't have a GPS, it was extremely difficult to know whether or not you were on pace. There were a few mile signs, some clocks, and some marks on the ground, but you never really knew where you were! I think the 24-mile marker was where the 25-mile marker should have been. (3) For $95, you got a non-technical T-Shirt (and they didn't even have my size!) and a medal. There was NO FOOD to be found after the marathon (and I finished within 4 hours). (4) I crossed the starting line with a friend, and her chip time is more than a minute off her clock time, which is correct. However, my chip time is one second off my clock time. How could this be when we crossed the start line together? On the positive side, the course could probably be a very fast course if you get a non-windy day. The wind this year was very gusty, and it took a lot out of me. The wind was particularly bad for the last three or so miles. I have never seen so many people moving so slowly at the end of a race. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 3 The 1st few miles of the course? GREAT!! Advertised as "no time limit," but no support for slower racers. We knew the police support would be gone. But the course was not marked, and when I asked a policeman how we were supposed to know when to turn with them gone, he said "Just follow the people in front of you." We did, and then on Flamingo, someone in a silver car (race staff?) stopped and told 5 of us that we were going the wrong way, and we had to turn around and go back a few blocks and go up to Twain to get back on the course. But the people ahead of us kept going toward Sinatra, and did not turn around. The extra mile we walked was not fun. The finish line offered a bottle of H2O and our medal. Nothing else. No medical staff or food. As a person who has run 60 marathons, I can name many small and large ones that have food and medical support at the finish line. I was prepared for no H2O or food along the course, but to not have the course marked was a new experience for me. My son did the race (his 1st) with me, and I assured him that this was not the normal marathon with no directions, or support for slower people. And then the final long walk through Mandalay Bay to the tram, was a real kicker!! My husband and I renewed our wedding vows during the race, and to start us with the elite and fast runners was a big mistake. We were pushed and elbowed. And no wonder - they were trying to win. A suggestion: there should be an early start for these people that are getting married. A great attempt, but this race needs lots of work. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 Disorganized start, 12 minutes late. Baggage check was a nightmare before and after. Great first 10K down the strip and Fremont, but forgettable course after that. A plus for wide avenues and great traffic control. Mile markers and signs were WAY off. Water stops were grossly understaffed. Strong headwind for the last two miles of ugly road to finish. No food? Unforgivable! Promised on-course entertainment was very minimal - how disappointing!! Needs a lot of work to live up to the hype and the big-city $100 entry fee. Separating the half and the full at the start would help a lot. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 With the Blue Man Group, fireworks, huge money for the pro's... all said and done... the real show-stoppers for me were those who ran for a cause. Team in Training, American Stroke Association... and on and on... these runners and their families really united at this year's New Las Vegas Marathon... and stole the show! God bless you all! | |

"Don't waste your time" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 The LV Marathon and half marathon were way over-hyped. The expo, course, entertainment and spectators were all mediocre. Comments: -I got to the expo early on Saturday and they had already run out of pins and zip ties for chips. Where am I supposed to find these things as an out-of-town traveler? -The start was a disaster. We had to hurdle 2 barricades to get out onto the strip and once we reached the start line (10 min. later), the Blue Man Group took a break. Seriously? They can't play for the 20 minutes it takes people to cross the start? -After you left the strip at mile 6.5, there was nothing to do, to look at, or to be entertained by.... -Probably the worst offense of the day was the mile markers.... They were off. How can you mess that up? By miles 3-4 they were already .2 miles short. Which means during the "tougher" miles, the miles literally got longer.... -This is not a PR course between the wind, short and long miles, and lack of organization. -It was also disappointing to be handed a medal I paid close to $90 for that was still wrapped in plastic. The volunteer who handed it to me said, "We didn't have time to unwrap it." Hmm, what were they doing for the few hours it took us to cross the finish? | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 The mileage markers were either missing or way off the mark. One of them had to be at least 300-400 yards short of the actual mark spray painted on the pavement. The beginning had no clearly marked corrals and people just jumped the barricade. No map of the start to show where the corrals would be for the preferred start either. I could not find food at the end. The race was difficult with a 10+ mph headwind from miles 10-20 and the last two. Nothing you can really do about it because the days before and after were windless. It is an open course so wind will be a problem. Not much fan support, especially because some of the areas were industrial or vacant land. Those that were there were nice. Volunteers were helpful. It is always enjoyable to go to Las Vegas and running down the strip is cool, but I may not return until they get the bugs out. |
