I ran the half because I was injured, but it was fun - better than the last 2 years, with better organization, awards and post-race activities. It snowed. I will do it again.

This is my 5th Waco and #49. It gets better every year. Hats off to Nancy Goodnight; as she said at the Houston expo, it would be a good one. This marathon is for you, if you're a "runner." This is not for you if you like to whine about the hills, or it being too hot, too cold, too windy, too sunny, too cloudy, and having too many people or not enough people. By now you should have gotten my point; the list of complaints goes on and on. Its a marathon. :) Thanks again for all of the support from the locals. It was a great marathon. It's not the biggest, but it is up there with the best of them.

"Hard but great!" (about: 2009)

The course was definitely hard but it was very well organized and obviously done by a real marathoner. Having snacks, fruit, water and Gatorade at every station was awesome - much better than just water and Gatorade alone. It also helped to have stations with bottles so that I could carry them a little longer. Bananas and oranges all along the way were great. I did not care for the T-shirts, especially the finisher's shirt, which was an ugly gold color and not something I will ever wear again. White is always the best. Medals were different and, while cool, I would have preferred a more traditional medal that had the race and year written on it.

I ran the 1/2 marathon this year after last running it in 2006. The race is much improved and is a must-run for anyone looking for a challenging course and something different from the typical big-city races.

* Course changed and improved. Hilly and very scenic. Loved it!!!
* Race started right on time... THANKS, it was chilly at the start line.
* Course was VERY well marked.
* Plenty of water stops. Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who manned the water stops. YOU ROCK!
* Excellent organization. Appreciated the awards being given out so promptly.
* Awesome medals

Job well done. I plan to be back to run the full.

"This was a great first race experience" (about: 2009)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I ran the half and this was my first race longer than a 10K. The course was marked well with chalk and mile markers. There were plenty of water stops staffed with enthusiastic folks who even took time to write words of inspiration in chalk on the road. The finisher's medal will get a place of honor in my home and I've already worn the finisher's tech shirt to a group run. The organization of the race was first rate. I was impressed that the race director did her own test runs on the full and half courses.

I enjoyed the whole thing very much. Since I ran the Cowtown the day before, my goal was to finish and that took the pressure off for me, as I knew I'd walk the steep hills. I found a buddy to run with and we just had a hoot.

Everything was marked well - not one problem. All aid stations had super people and even the two little aid stations provided by residents at the top of the first set of hills on Lake Shore were fun. Normally, wouldn't have stopped but wanted to show appreciation for the people coming outside on a cold day and providing encouragement.

I didn't think I was going to like the dam out-and-back, but it was just the right distance and offered a good view, so yep, I'm glad it was there.

Food at the end was great, music super, and give-aways wonderful. I'd been looking for those sandals since receiving my pair 2 years ago at Phoenix. Mine had worn out.

Also, thanks on the age group medals. I like that as I never really have a shot at a medal in the larger events, so it's nice even when there are not a whole lot of people in the age group to get something besides finishing.

I, personally, can't think of anything to critique in a negative way. Way to go, and thanks for you and your group's hard work and stress. Bask in the warmth of a super successful event!

"ignore the stars - great race!" (about: 2009)

I need a fourth box: "How did you like the race?" This was a small race... a young race, at a totally different time of the year for the first time. It got very few stars on that grading system.

Let's be honest here. The number one thing that you will notice about this course is that it is tough. One of the toughest marathons that you will ever enjoy running!

This is not the final date for the race, I hear. The race was moved from October to get better weather. It was very comfortable this year. A bit windy, but it beat last October when I was looking for shade at the 22-mile rest stop tents!

The course runs through the entire city - the good, the bad and beautiful! I love that about city races.... There are some lovely views of the lake as well. The run through the park is amazing! You will have a difficult time finding anything as nice as that part of the course for views - or finding any more difficult hills to run either - but I have already mentioned that it is not a powder puff marathon for newbies and flat desert course freaks.

The first half of the marathon is basically a five mile flat warm-up for a 7-mile grade. The second half makes you forget that grade as it take you down hills just to climb even larger ones! It is one awesome course once you hit the park! You will love it... even if you don't appreciate having to run 20 to 24.

We got a new medal this year - very nice, unique. It could easily become a spinner... I hope that they don't change the medal! I'd run the race for the medal; it is that special. Don't get all fancy on us... you can paint it, and put relief on it if you get rich, but don't change it much. Very special medal for a very special race.

Okay, this year they changed the date. They changed the medal. They added mile markers. They chalked the entire city! The upgraded the food! It was yummy - well, to me. A good salad with plenty of dressing choices, tomato sauce spaghetti or noodles Alfredo, garlic bread... and all of the usual finish line stuff and chocolate milk! They always have chocolate milk at the finish.

I am sorry that I missed the pre-race meal, as I just drove down the day of the race. Packet pickup was easy. There were rest stops just about every mile, it seemed. I have no complaints about this race or how well it is put on. I only wish that they could keep the race so that it could be run as a double... that was sweet!

Oh, it is a great charity too! How can you go wrong?

Once again, I was not disappointed. Great marathon. Extremely challenging and a great endurance test for yourself. It gets better every year. Few fans on the course, but lots of very nice supporters at the aid stations. Nice finisher shirts this year - and even nicer medals.

"Hilly, beautiful, and wonderful" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons

This was a small and definitely tough course. There were fewer than 100 marathoners. The many hills were usually steep, but mostly short. I have run 26 miles in training (all flat terrain) and yet I had to walk all of the steep uphill parts. The course takes you through many parts of Waco. The second half was particularly beautiful. The course was well marked and I had no problem staying on course. Being a small race, there were parts were I ran alone. The one thing I noticed about this race was that there was plenty of water/food throughout the race - just about at every mile, and on some miles there were multiple stations. There were many volunteers - thanks! There wasn't much crowd support but I didn't mind. At the end, there were finisher shirts, finisher medals, age group medals, and lots of food. The best part of the race for me was meeting two other racers (Waco locals Mitch and Bud) who helped pace me on the last half. I was seriously fading, but they helped inspire me to continue. I have only done 6 marathons, but in my opinion, this race had the best organization and support, by far! It isn't for anyone due to the small size but I loved it. I am from Los Angeles, CA and hope to do this again in the future. I am so glad that I was able to experience this race.... Thanks to the RD.

This was my fist time running in a small marathon and first time running MMM. This race exceeded my expectations. It was well organized. The course was well marked and had plenty of aid stations with friendly people. The course was very beautiful and tough and I enjoyed it. I plan to run this race again.
