"Quiet trail run... but lots of mosquitoes!" (about: 2007)

I came in from VA to run this race leading up to MCM and loved the crushed limestone/gravel course. The leaves were changing, which made the course more enjoyable. Shirt design could have been nicer as was earlier mentioned. There were loads of mosquitoes out on the course. Too bad I forgot my bug spray!

"Great Marathon" (about: 2007)

I truly enjoyed this marathon. The layout made it possible for me to connect with my "fan base" several times. That they had plenty of water, Gatorade and GU was just one of the signs of a well organized event. The shady course kept us cool on an otherwise warm day. I would like to run this one again.

Most scenic course of any marathon I've run (this was my 16th). Good surface and level. The perfect race for a hot day mostly in the shade. Great organization, great volunteers, great spectator fans but not enough of them. Perfect finish: Arby's Roast Beef, Free Beer, and a hot tub! If you like a small field, Towpath is a Must-Run!

"Good Race... Weird Shirt" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Towpath Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I enjoyed this race. Although it was essentially an out/back on a trail (expect boring), the differing landscape made it less monotonous.
2 suggestions:
1. Design the shirt to look less like anatomy.... I've had several people give me funny looks when I wear it (I'm no longer allowed to wear it per my husband, ha!).
2. Be ready to make the hot-tubs into ice-tubs at the end of the race depending on the weather. Ice baths would have been invaluable!!!

Suggestion for future runners- don't wear ultra-short socks- gravel seemed to be shooting directly into my socks!

"Breathtaking views" (about: 2007)

Okay, so this not a spectator course because your on an awesome trail almost the entire race. The Towpath Marathon is however well run, extremely beautiful with a home town atmosphere. This was my 12th marathon and I have to say my new favorite. The race is such a great alternative to large ones. I will be back next year.

"Highly recommend for runners tired of mega-mara." (about: 2007)

Wonderful course set in National Recreation area. Flat and forgiving surface with multiple opportunities to see the leaders. More Gu and Gatorade than any other race. If you are planning on running at Marine Corp or NYC later in the Fall, this is a great tune up.

"I enjoyed my first marathon on this scenic course" (about: 2007)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

This was my first marathon and I enjoyed the course and the experience. I was concerned that the weather might be 45 degrees and rain, but who would have expected 88 and sunny- similar to the kind of weather I had trained in. The first 18 miles were mostly shaded and the aid stations were well stocked and staffed. I would have preferred a straight-in sprint to a finish line visible from a distance, not the tight turn and the parking block tripping hazard about 25 yards from the finish. Another bummer was being held for an annoying 30-second delay for traffic at the road crossing on the northern loop of the course. My family support group enjoyed this setting and I learned some things from this first marathon experience. We are looking forward to a second try next year!

"Loved the course - very scenic!" (about: 2007)

I loved running on the more-forgiving towpath surface and ran a PR. I would have preferred if the race shirt were a more runner-friendly, dry-weave material. The total cost for this marathon was much less than another one I had planned on attending (Baltimore Marathon), which factored into my decision.

Great organization and helpful staff. Despite the record heat, the (frequent) water stations were well stocked and well staffed. The shade on the scenic run was perfect for race conditions as well.

This was my first half marathon experience, and it was great!! I enjoyed the ease of the course and the nice environment. I have and will continue to recommend this race. I am hoping to also make the Towpath Marathon my first full marthon in the fall of 2008!!! Thanks a bunch!
