"Poor course design" (about: 2004)

This was my first time running at San Antonio, but I have heard that they changed the course this year. It was a double loop, which was boring. Also, the second loop was longer and the end of the race wound around the finish line for about 45 minutes; I thought those were bad ideas psychologically. Volunteers were great, but there was little course-side entertainment (like at Motorola, where bands come out and play on the side of the road). The traffic police were courteous and encouraging, although some intersections near the end of the course were left unmonitored after only 3.5 hours (dangerous!).

"GREAT EXPO; friendly & helpful, well organized" (about: 2004)

Course was compact but could have shown more tourist sites. Friendly & helpful volunteers & police. Need more music along the way. Small town atmosphere; needs more media coverage. Great expo and finish area.

Should have provided spectator course map to watch/encourage their runner friends; mostly downtown so easy to watch. Better every year; great run for all volunteer effort. Liked the 1/2 marathon race too.

San Antonio is a wonderful city - I wish we could have seen more of it during the race. Mediocre course, terrible traffic control (they allowed cars and buses to cross the route, so we had to run through clouds of exhaust.)

Hardly any spectators on the route. And why on earth don't they put the Alamo on the finisher's medals? But the volunteers were great! Hands down, they were the best thing about this race.

I love the early start. It has the best finish line food that I am aware of. Great people. Even if you are not from Texas, you will love this race and people of Texas.

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This course was a lot of fun because there were lots of spectators. The first half was a killer because they threw in a couple huge hills that wipe you out, but after that (about mile 9) it is much flatter and starts to go downhill until mile 22-23. The volunteers were very encouraging and nice. I would definitely recommend this marathon.

"Pleasantly surprised... Not as bad as I expected" (about: 2003)

After reading the scathing reviews the San Antonio Marathon had received in previous years, I entered this (my first) marathon with a bit of additional trepidation. So, I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly the race went.

The course winds through historic downtown S.A., up near the zoo, through downtown, around the King William district, and near the missions. There were some pretty good hills around miles 7-9, but the rest of the course was fairly flat (with the exception of the overpasses around mile 18 and 20 -- pure torture!). There was a lot of out-and-back on the course, but I hardly noticed the repetition. The course was very well-marked, with the good folks from the USAF providing direction at all turns. The crowd support was lacking on the course, but coming into the finish there was a pretty good crowd (at least they were noisy).

I was a bit put off by having to pay to park at the Alamodome after the $75 entry fee. I've run at several events in the Houston area that started at similar venues and never had to pay for parking.

I'm not a big race expo person, but the expo for the marathon left a bit to be desired, particularly after being at the expo for the Houston Marathon.

In spite of some limitations, overall, this is not bad for a smaller marathon. I would definitely do it again.

"Nice flat course. Enthusiastic volunteers." (about: 2003)

The course was nice and flat for the Texas Hill Country. The volunteers were enthusiastic and supportive. There were more fans than I expected, but I didn't expect any. I was disappointed that the CarBoom promised in the fliers wasn't there. All things considered, I'll probably run it again.

"Not bad... but not great" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 1

It's a pretty vanilla race actually. It's not a wonderful race, but it's pretty nice. It was my first marathon and I enjoyed it, it was great having pacers available and I stuck with a group for most of the race, which increased my enjoyment. The course is loopy and not terribly scenic but not awful. There aren't any fans to speak of, so bring family :).

"The worst marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 1  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

On the entire planet there is not a worse marathon. The couse is terrible, the organization stinks, the water stations are a joke. Never run this race - you will waste your time, energy and money.

"Needs Help!!!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 1

This was my first marathon so I can't compare this to any other similar events. However, the event guaranteed t-shirts to those who pre-registered. I pre-registered and was told at the expo that they had run out of relay t-shirts... that totally sucked!... I was told they would mail my shirt within a week... still no t-shirt.

Local media attention was beyond poor. Shame on the City of San Antonio for charging race participants to park at the Alamodome.
