"San Antonio marathon doesnt deserve the bad rap" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

I think San Antonio got a bad rap in the marathon ratings (MarathonGuide.com). The aid stations were well done, the traffic protection was first-rate and the course is tough but scenic. I thought it was very well done and will return next year.

"Slippery when wet" (about: 2003)

This was my 88th marathon and I must say after reading the comments from the previous years, I was apprehensive about doing it. Then I said, 'let me see what all these weenies are complaining about'. This course was dead flat and reminded me of Chicago without all the hype. The finish was super and the 7am start was perfect.

The long-sleeve finisher's shirt was a great added touch!

"A nice event in a beautiful city" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Thank you for accommodating slow runners/walkers. We had a great time yesterday. Perfect weather didn't hurt but I believe we would have enjoyed the event regardless of the temperature. We brought 15 people this year (3:40 to 7:09 finishers). We will be back next year! I was the 7:09.

The refreshments at the finish were great! Red beans and rice, baked potatoes, a variety of drinks and more.

If you want a nice event in a beautiful city, this is it!

"Super marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Wow, what a neat experience running the San Antonio Marathon. I was so pleased with the organization and the helpers and fans and the San Antonio police department. I loved the course layout. I liked the mix of hills here and there and the scenery.
I tip my hat to all those who had a part in putting the marathon together. A job well done, folks!
Cool medals, too. Thanks! I will definitely be back and will bring others with me next time.

"You will not enjoy this marathon... it's boring" (General Comments)

COURSE: 1  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 2

I have run this marathon at least 10 times through the years. The past several years, it has deteriorated in organization and quality. It is not runner-friendly. I believe it is a reflection on the Roger Soler Sports group that directs the race. It's obvious they do not care about details or runner's comments/concerns... only as a money maker. The course is totally boring, information is hard to get, after-race food is a joke, and you have to wait around 2 hours or more for awards(which are also a joke)... and if you don't wait they tell you that they can't be mailed. The expo is almost non-existent... at one time, I looked forward to purchasing merchandise at this race, but now it is a very small venue with not much more than Roger Soler Store merchandise... sad. San Antonio is a beautiful city and home of the NBA champs. It deserves something more to reflect the city's progress and charm, which could be incorporated into this event. Texas has a lot of good marathons... this is not one of them. To further support some of these thoughts, about 3 years ago, Roger Soler took over the directorship of the Sunmart Texas Trail Endurance Runs, held in December in Huntsville, TX. Since that time, that race is also going downhill in many ways in my view. It was a wonderful event that grew to national prominence under the direction of Norm and Helen Klein... truly outstanding and personable directors. The race has become stagnant. Communication is almost non-existent, and nothing has changed for the good of the race, But, fees have gone up considerably, now $80-$90, and awards are cut back more each year to the point of not honoring established commitments made by previous directors. The Sunmart people are great, and have staged one of the premiere trail runs in the country, but someone needs to find out who's minding the store here, and why many runners have become negative on Sunmart. It's gradually taking on the flavor of the San Antonio Marathon.

"I hate this race..." (General Comments)

Being from San Antonio, I have run this race for three years now. I doesn't come close to comparing to the other Texas marathons. The course is senseless and boring - there are much nicer areas in SA to route the course through. The expo is lame. And the post-race party is also very lame. I have come to the conclusion that this mararthon is solely a money-grabbing sceme. Save your money and don't come here. New York is held at about the same time and much more worth it...

"Disappointing for a walker too...." (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

My first marathon and quite a frustrating event. I have Crohn's disease, asthma and some arthritis, so I trained painstakingly for it for about 7 months. Walkers started at 5am since the race was reduced to 6 hours from 8 (complete turn off). The cones/police protection was cut off early so I was forced on the sidewalk (after the overpass surprise!). That was so infuriating because I was mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted and couldn't beat the crowds of downtown out of my way. Since I was one of the last people in, there were no spectators and no finish line. It was so disappointing and kind of sad. I don't recommend this marathon to anyone. I thought this was going to be a happy moment to remember, but it was mostly a big regret. :o( If you're going to do a marathon in Texas - go for Houston!

"Average marathon, lots of room for improvement" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

The route through downtown is really nice, as well as around McAllister Park, but in between is not a nice route. The organization needs to improve, the course map was available 3 weeks before the race and the elevation map 2 weeks before the race, plus the fact that 2 overpasses are not clearly shown on this map, and end up being killers for some of the average runners. I saw one runner almost being runned off, because the police officer assigned to the intersection was probably in the restroom, or having a doughnut, so I agree that Police protection is not good.
Positives, not a crowded marathon so PR are possible, friendly people and good weather. Would consider running again.

"Course is not friendly toward runners" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Baracades were removed too early. This created dangerous situations but added additional time to runners who had to wait for the lights. Additionally, directional markers were non-existent once the baracades were gone. I added 2 miles to my course after getting lost. I was not a happy runner.

"It was my first marathon, my last in San Antonio" (General Comments)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

This was my first marathon ever. I had trained very diligently and was ready for the challenge. I had heard the course was not the best and had seen the map several times, but you just can't grasp how horrible the course is until you are out and stuck on it. There were ENTIRELY TOO MANY TURNAROUNDS! You pass some of the same things 2 or 4 times. At one point we went over an overpass, major downer! The course is somewhat hilly, but do you need to add an overpass? San Antonio is not designed to have a 26.2 mile run, there is not enough room.
The race was well organized and the volunteers were awesome! Lots of water and Powerade. But, there were not hardly any spectators until the very end. The weather on that particularly morning was horrid! Foggy and muggy and you couldn't breathe! That combined with the crummy course was quite a let down!
