"Could be great but isn't" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

Let me start by saying this was my first but I was very disappointed.

For starters, the course map was not up on the web page until about three weeks before the event and the elevation map was only up for about two.

The Expo was extremely lame, but I suspect that they all are. I was told there that there would be no food or goo on the course only to find out there was.

I didn't find an article in the paper on Sat, and Sun had a very small article.

They cleared the streets early and fan support was nonexistent.

I'm hoping for much better at my next marathon and I won't run SA again for a long time.

"not again..." (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

Well, i will begin by saying i was not prepared enough for the hills in this course, but that aside, i was not thrilled by the way the marathon was organized. They claimed to keep the course open for 6 hours, yet the local police moved runners off the street after 3 hours. which meant the rest of us had to dodge traffic and stop at lights etc. terrible. the aid stations were not appropriately spaced out. i had to keep asking volunteers when the next one would be coming up, as with the port-a-potties. i think i saw one or two sets of port-a-potties for 26 miles! the aid stations pretty much closed down after the cops moved from the course, um, excuse me: some of us are not 3 hours marathoners.

Ggood things: well, i didn't finish in the alloted time, but was given a medal and a finisher's shirt anyway, which was nice.

to improve this race, i would first get the cooperation of the local police dept. that is a must. then create more aid stations, if there aren't enough volunteers to man them, leave them self serving, but please HAVE THEM THERE! this was my first marathon and it has left a bad taste in my mouth. i will not be doing this one again.

"Ran out of shirts / Crummy Expo" (about: 2001)

Could use some help! The town is neat and if you have a few days and want to combine a marathon and a mini-vacation, then this could be the place for you. The expo was a major let down, unfortunately they let some people register the morning of the marathon, so they ran out of t-shirts and the aid stations weren't very well stocked. You do get to run past the Alamo, which makes for a nice Kodak moment, if you aren't in a hurry. I won't repeat this one.

"Boring course" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

San Antonio is a wonderful city to visit but unfortunately everything worth looking at is located in a small area in downtown. Other than about 4 miles of the race where you are in the downtown area the rest of the course wanders through the most depressing parts of the city. There is minimal fan support and it got very hot toward the end of the run.

The timing of the race was off. They gave you a chip to wear, but then did not give you a chip time with the results.

None the less, if you are traveling with a non-running spouse, he/she will have a delightful time at the Riverwalk and seeing the historic sites.

"Best marathon weather you could ask for!!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Initially, I was psyched about the marathon. Then, a resident of SA told my friend & I that the previous marathon was not good; cops were rude and drivers were rude. He said people were very unsupportive & the time alotted to complete the marathon was not enough. Being my 2nd marathon I was concerned. I'm a runner, but not a fast one. The day of came. The weather was PERFECT. There were plenty of H2O stations. The course was scenic, fast, and minor hills. I loved it. One very mentally challenging aspect was the back-tracking on the course and not knowing where the heck the faster runners were going, or you for that matter. I am doing it again this year though. I only hope for orange slices again b/n miles 13 - 16.

"Fast, flat course" (about: 1995)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran my PR here on a brisk morning in '95, so it was a special place for me. I don't understand the others' criticism. The course was scenic and fast, and San Antonio is a fine place to spend a couple of days. At that time, at least, the number of runners was under control (1,000 or fewer), so it didn't take 3-4 minutes to cross the starting line.

"Never again!!!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

Road surface is terrible, not enough water stations - there would be 2 water stations within half a mile of each other and then nothing for 2 miles or more.
Very demotivating to run out and back all the time, seeing all the other runners but not knowing where the turn around point is.

"Mind killer returning on same course" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

It was very difficult for me seeing runners coming back on the same course we were running and not knowing where exactly the turning point was. I was very demotivated for that reason and it made the second half more difficult for me. I also think there should be some fruit at the water stations, like bananas, orange slices, etc. That would help runners a lot. Anyway I want to thank everyone that helped and contributed to this race.

"Don't do it......................" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 2

Had to pick up chip on race morning. Cops stared yelling at us to get to the side of the road even though we were well within the alloted time. Had to stand in line to get the medal. Ran out of finisher shirts...S--ked. That's my story and I'm sticking to it and I hope the people in-the-know read this and want to contact me. Did I mention that I will NEVER run this one again EVER?????????

"Friendly folks. Well-organized. Nice course." (about: 2000)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

I ran the SA Marathon in 2000 for the first time, my 12th marathon overall. I really enjoyed it, although I did not know a soul. Very friendly runners, and I really enjoyed meeting and running with several of them for various multi-mile stretches. Good support, waterwise. The food at the finish was rather unhealthy (heavy on animal products). Excellent parking close by in the Alamodome lots. Good, although somewhat hilly course. The out and backs were fun and you could see the runners who were ahead and behind you. Lots of spectators at beginning, not so many away from the downtown area.
