"Great marathon" (about: 2006)

This was my first visit to San Francisco. I enjoyed the city and the marathon. I loved the necklace! (The necklace was one of the reasons that I selected this marathon.) The weather was comfortable, and it was the first time I had run in fog. The course was beautiful.

Like most marathons, the first couple of miles were crowded. Although I wasn't part of TNT, many people still cheered for me. Plus all of the volunteers were friendly. I would run this one again!

Some of the negative comments I've read make me wonder if those people ran a completely different race. This was my second time running this marathon, and I feel that it's an extraordinary experience! There were lots of water stops filled with volunteers, and a healthy number of spectators. I would have preferred more DJs and water stops further down Highway 1, right before Lake Merced, and more water around the lake, but it wasn't unbearable or anything. Although it's easy to feel left out if you're not with TNT, I just wrote my name on my bib and got some cheers! The finisher's shirt is AWESOME and post-race food and drink are great. My only (selfish!) gripe is that it would have been nice to see more people doing massages, because the wait was sooo long.

There were seven of us coming from Calgary, Alberta to run this marathon, and I believe a total of 70 runners came from our city. We spent a considerable amount of money - but boy was it worth it. We loved everything, the whole atmosphere of the run, the togetherness, the friendships, the finisher's prizes etc., etc. For those men that are whining about having to wear a women's shirt I can only say, too bad! You have no idea how many ugly, ill-fitting men's shirts I have collected over the years because usually everyone caters to men in these races. This was a women's marathon, so suck it up and give the shirt and necklace to your wife or girlfriend! See you in 2007!

"My first marathon... not bad" (about: 2006)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

First marathon we've ever done (hubby and myself). Agree 100%... not enough bathrooms!! We waited as long as we could - at the mile 4 marker we waited 17 minutes for the bathroom. Should have a t-shirt for the guys and maybe a key chain or money clip. they know how many sign up so wouldn't need to guess on numbers! Lake Merced was the worst. Not enough cheer stations or water breaks. Had 13-something-minute miles until we were going around that lake. Dying for water! We finished in just under six hours (not bad for only 8-9 mile training runs - injury) and were disappointed everything was being wrapped up at the finish line. Made us feel insignificant! We were part of TNT and talked with anyone and everyone. But we did notice people cheering only for TNT participants, which was sad. Saw TNT coaches helping others and giving snacks to everyone along the way. Disappointed in the fact that a lot of stations ran out of things - i.e., chocolate. Don't understand why the after-party was closed down so soon. Not all timers at mile markers worked. Should have mile signs in a different color from the "run for" signs!

I made the right choice going to Chicago.

Loved the race. It was tough but to see all these women... and men running for a good cause were wonderful. Very disappointed with the necklace though. Nowhere on it does it say that you ran a marathon. Half and full got the exact same necklace. I really feel that it should be distinguished between the two and written somewhere on the front of it.

"I'll definitely be back - but for the half!" (about: 2006)

This is a great race - the course is amazing, especially the first half. The only part I didn't like was the loop around Lake Merced - I was prepared for the big hills, but this was a long gradual hill running right alongside traffic and with little support. Even with the hills I was able to PR by 12 minutes. Loved the finisher's shirts and necklace. I'd much rather have the necklace than a medal that I'd shove in a drawer and forget about. There weren't a lot of spectators early on, but that's not when I need them - there were big crowds at mile 11, 16 and then along the Great Highway, which was really motivating. Overall a great experience!

The course had some challenging factors (such as the hills, and that long, flat stretch at the end) but they made the course more interesting. The spectators were very supportive.

"Incredible First Race" (about: 2006)

This was an incredible first marathon for me. I think Nike did a great job and its too bad most people on this site complain. First off, I'm a guy and knew I was running a women's marathon. I did it with TNT and am perfectly happy with the finishing necklace and shirt. I ran this race for the challenge, not the gifts - and anyway, they make great conversation pieces and give me the opportunity to tell others what I accomplished. Secondly, elevation maps were posted well before race day, so hills should be no surprise. Thirdly, the time people were required to finish by was clearly posted prior to race day. Congrats on finishing, but how long should everyone wait. Fourth, how could you not know where to line up before the race? Did you look at the map in your race bag?! And as for the expo, why should Nike invite anyone else when Nike spent the money on this race? Why did most of you run, for pre-race and post-race activities and gifts or for the challege and the cause? How 'bout some constructive criticism and stop the stupid complaining? Or how about telling others who have never run how great it feels to accomplish something as great as a marathon? I guess next year Nike should have an all-downhill course allowing people four days to finish, with filet mignon and personal stretch limos at the finish. Sounds like something everyone could do, which wouldn't make us special.

"SF has HILLS" (about: 2006)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

The course was challenging, but SF has hills - no way around that, so you just need to train for them. Support was great at water and aid stations. Expo was so-so. Start porta-potties were fantastic - very few lines!!!!! Yes, Team in Training was well represented, both among racers and supporters. I was disappointed at the lack of support Nike showed Team members who through their efforts raised money but were not allowed to sell Team merchandise at the expo. Nike also failed to have the appropriate supply of medium, large and extra large t-shirts at the finish and expo. We are not all small!! Necklaces were very nice!! Also, the July '06 SF Marathon had a much better display of results online (Nike's was very limited).
