"An awesome race, though not one I'd do twice" (about: 2006)

This was my first marathon, and I had a fantastic time. I went with TNT, so I was in the 'group,' but I can see how one might feel out of it if they went on their own. It was well organized, the water and food stations were well staffed, and the first few miles of the course were breathtaking, with the fogged in Golden Gate. The leg of the race through the residential areas was boring. There was not a great deal of crowd support, even through the chute and at the finish line, which was a shame. The leg of the race through Golden Gate Park was beautiful, and ending right on the beach was fantastic. The 'extras' were well-done: the necklace is beautiful, the 'Run for' signs were fun to look out for, the race shirt is awesome (for a woman), and the flute ensemble standing at the top on mile 7 was perfect! Being SF, the hills were pretty brutal, and so I don't know if I'd do it again, but overall, it was defnitely worth doing once, especially when you take some of the down time to explore the city.

"Great If You've Done a Marathon Before" (about: 2005)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

I thought this was a great marathon. I ran it in 2005, and, at the time it was my fourth marathon. I've also registered for the 2007 race. I was scared but also excited by the hills as an extra challenge. I was actually surprised that my mile splits were actually FASTER on the hill miles than the flatter miles! My title says this is a great marathon if you've done a marathon before, and I think that is true, at least if you are like me. I did my first marathon in 2002 (Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC) and it was great because it was FLAT! I think that is optimal for many people, especially first-timers. I would have found a hilly marathon very daunting for the first time around.

Oh, another great bonus was the temperature - it was perfect and cool, but not too cold, whereas Marine Corps and San Jose (which I did in 2006) were too hot. If you want an expo experience, this race isn't stellar, but as an experienced marathoner I don't really need that anymore. Marine Corps expo can't be beat! I personally liked the goodies being a necklace and a shirt tailored for women. The medals get kind of pointless after awhile because you can't do anything with them! And having a shirt that actually FIT ME was great. All the other marathons gave me shirts made for MEN and I never wore them because they were ill fitting. For any men complaining about this marathon, suck it up and run a different race. It's called the Nike Women's Marathon. Let us have just one okay? All the others are geared towards you....

If you are a man or are not with Team in Training, don't even think about this one. Even the so-called expo only had things for women - not even one shirt for a man. And since it was a Nike race, they were the only vendor. As for the course, I loved the first half but then you are out on a desolate highway for the last half of the race. Finally, after finishing what do they give the men that finish? A baby blue shirt that says, "Ran like a girl" - and a necklace. Thanks a lot. The only good thing I can say about this race is with over 15,000 women running, there was a lot of tail to look at. San Fran: love the town hate the race.

"Awesome Experience!" (about: 2006)

This was my first marathon and I did run with TNT. Yes, the hills were challenging, but it is San Fran. The course was beautiful, but the lake did seem just a little long. The necklace and t-shirt were awesome! The spectators really kept me going! I enjoyed the music and "run for" signs. There was plenty of water and sports drinks along the way. I would love to run this marathon again. For the people that have a lot of complaints, just remember this race benefited a wonderful society and helped many people in their fight against leukemia and lymphoma.

"Best race ever!" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 2 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This year was my 2nd year running the half marathon, and it is truly an awesome experience. I have run two other halves and one full, and this one is by far the best. I did not run with TNT, and spectators tend to cheer only for TNT people, but that is my only complaint. The organization improved a lot from 2005, especially the finish line corrals, bag drop, and busing back to Union Square. People have complained that bag drop and the course was confusing, but you get a fantastic course map with all the information on it in your race packet, so if you take the time to look at it, everything should be very clear. Even without the map, the course was well-marked. I generally try to get the bathroom breaks over with before the race, so I didn't have a problem with lack of porta-potties. I love the necklace (different from last year's, of course), love, love, love the hot men in tuxes, adore the finisher t-shirt (I got mine in a small - it fits perfectly, and I'm average), and really enjoyed spending a weekend with my girlfriend's and family. I personally don't find expos all that entertaining, but at this one I got a manicure, which is more than I got from any other race expo. And the talk given about running hills was priceless!

I would recommend this race to any one, especially women who want to make an event out of a race. This race is special not because of the PRs, or the t-shirt, or even the necklace, but because of what it means. I ran most of the race next to a man who had a shirt with a picture of a little boy on the back, and and above it said, "In memory of my son." That's why you run.

"Disappointed" (about: 2006)

I was relatively disappointed with this marathon. The first half of the course was exciting and beautiful, but it went way downhill after that. The second half of the course had very little crowd support and it made the race much more difficult to complete. At about mile 20 there was a portion of the course that was on the side of a busy road and cars were buzzing by. Portions of the course were also confusing. I saw several people stop because they weren't sure that they were going the correct way. That should NEVER happen in major race. I ran the Detroit Marathon a couple of years ago and found the scenery and crowd in that marathon to be much better.

"Course was beautiful; a great girl event" (about: 2006)

This was my second marathon and I enjoyed it as much as my first (Chicago), even PRed by 12 minutes. The only thing beneficial I got from the expo was the pace band specific to this course. Otherwise, it was a waste of time. I ran with TNT for the 2nd time - an awesome experience. The regular race packet pickup seemed to go smoothly but the TNT pickup was unnecessarily long and in an inconvenient place (the 4th floor of Niketown). The Nike marathon clothing were sized for models, not real women. I am fairly average size woman and had to get an XL t-shirt (which was much smaller than the XL finisher shirt). There were enough port-a-potties at the start, but not enough during the first 10 miles of the course. There needed to be more instructions about the gear drop-off BEFORE the race. The course was fabulous, except that part around the lakes. There wasn't enough water and we had to run on a sidewalk - yuck. The rest was just beautiful. It was a very different experience to run with mostly women. The last part to the finish was full of encouraging people and the blue box at the end made it all worthwhile. I'm already recruiting my friends to come back next year for the half (especially since the necklace is the same!).

Before I ran I was afraid of the hills; after running the marathon, all I can say is that I am amazed - the hills give the course character and make the time speed by!

Course was well marked, and the hills were not as brutal as at the SF Marathon. I ran with Team in Training, as did most of the field. Might be intimidating for those not wearing a purple TNT singlet. Even worse if you're not part of TNT AND a man! But, great for those who did!

"Boston, Baby!!" (about: 2006)

I signed up for this race with 12 girlfriends, and the jewelry was the main incentive, of course! This race is really fun, different for the "girly" aspect, and well-organized. The expo is not great, but Nike is everywhere and they do great "stuff," so we all loved the "Run Like A Girl" shirts and other paraphernalia. I was worried about "the hill" because I wanted to qualify for Boston. Obviously it's not that bad because I met my goal. I would recommend this race to any girls looking for a destination marathon.
