"Great Boston Qualifier Course!" (about: 2008)

My objective in coming to Tallahassee was to qualify for Boston, which I did.

The course is very flat indeed, and the bike trail where most of the route takes you is sheltered from the sun by the trees along the trail. Temperature was about 40F at the start to about 60F four hours later - sunny with no clouds. Traffic control was excellent and water or Gatorade were available every second mile. No timing chips, just gun time, but the small field did not make this an issue.

Food after the race could be better and the presenter could use a little more enthusiasm in presenting the awards. There aren't too many spectators, so self motivation is an asset....

The tech t-shirt was very nice.

Overall, a nice, small, but well organized race. It deserves to get bigger.

Definitely flat and cool, so quite favorable to achieving a BQ.

This was my 4th full marathon.... I ran the 1/2 here last year. Once again the organization is great, as are the volunteers, spectators, and organization. It is as good if not better than other places I've been to (albeit not for those who need big races), and if you want a fast course, I improved my time from the race 6 weeks prior by 8 minutes. A good course if you are trying for a BQ. :) Tallahassee RULES.

"Fantastic Small Marathon" (about: 2008)

This was my first Tallahassee Marathon and I was very impressed. The course was very flat and fast, the weather was ideal, water stops were frequent and well-stocked and the post-race refreshments were great. The pasta dinner was also nicely done. I qualified for Boston and I'm surprised the race isn't growing faster just with BQ attempts. I stayed at a Hampton and had no late checkout issues. It is true there are very few spectators. Only improvement I would like to see is a little more crowd/enthusiasum at the finish. Other than the one person handing medals out of a box, there is nobody there. I would definitely run this race again.

"Nearly perfect for my taste" (about: 2008)

Excellent, flat course. Perfect weather (50's with no wind). Friendly aid station workers. Enough runners to have a steady stream, but never crowded. Hope this one doesn't grow too much because it is run out-and-back on an asphalt bike path. Post-race massages; good variety of food and drink. Would have liked to have had the pre-race spaghetti dinner a bit closer to the host hotel, if possible, and would have liked to have had a better map with elevation profile. Fabulous, first-class event.

"Someone goofed!" (about: 2008)

50+ previous marathons | 2 Tallahassee Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 5

Someone goofed up, so the marathon was a bit of a disappointment. I took an early start with about a dozen other people, so I realize that there is a chance we could get off course. Nonetheless, we got off the course as soon as we left the track. We were to have turned right and go the first mile. The speedsters (why do fast people take an early start?) took a left following a big curved arrow made of flour. It was still dark so no one noticed the long curving arrow was to show the way to the finish area on the way back.... I ran this marathon last year so as soon as everyone turned left, I stopped and looked to see if there were ANY markings showing the route turned right, or if anyone would yell at us that we were off course. So, I figured the course must have been changed... that is until I got to mile 2 and knew there was NO WAY I could run that fast. Plus, I never saw a "1 mile" marker. This fact bothered me during the whole run. I told several people at water stops along the way (as did several other early starters) hoping that when we came back to the finish area we would be directed to complete the entire 26.2 miles - especially since the race director/committee would have over 4 hours to figure something out. But as I came back towards the finish, I asked several people directing the finishers if something had been done to compensate for the error. I was simply told where the finish line was. As I neared the line, I hesitated again mentioning the early starters had not done the entire course, but was told to come on through the chute. The attitude was that it did not matter; "it was just a mile." So, I had a great finish time!

Unfortunately, I have lost a considerable amount of weight since October and have been challenging myself since to run faster at each marathon - a total of 9. Tallahassee was #4 for 2008. I was hoping to shave off at least five minutes from last weekend's marathon, so I was really disappointed that nothing was done to make up that mile. Since I am a 50 States member, and as everyone knows marathoners are honest people, I went out and completed the last mile. A slow 15 minutes. Forever I will remember this marathon as the 25.2-mix up.

Other than that, it is a good course. Just needs to have a better map or make sure everyone knows about that first turn. Volunteers were great. And lots of gel, PowerAde, and pretzels on the course.

"Excellent Marathon Experience" (about: 2008)

Well organized marathon, and fun start and finish on FSU track. Excellent volunteers, traffic controllers, and water/Gu stations. Post-race food was very good. Agree, host hotel was not friendly or accommodating of runners. Would highly recommend race to all.

"Wonderful small marathon!" (about: 2008)

Tallahassee is a very pretty city, and this race was a wonderful event! The packet pickup was convenient and simple. The course, which was an out-and-back, was mostly along a wooded bike trail. The police did a great job of controlling traffic. There were plenty of water stations, and the spectators were very friendly. My only complaint, which is small, is that there should have been more port-o-lets, and finding a parking place was hard for me. Overall, this was a great race, and I'll be back next year! Go Noles!

"This is a super little race!" (about: 2008)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Tallahassee Marathon

This race gets high marks on everything - well, except this year's weather (the heat was murder for one who'd trained in 30's and 40's) ... can't blame the organizers for picking a heat-wave weekend :-).

Late registration on Saturday was easy to find, as were the FSU track and the bike path for a course preview.

The course is indeed flat (almost too flat) and very well marked throughout, and I personally like out-and-back camaraderie. And on a hot day, long shady stretches did help, as did the plentiful aid stations. The course is also very conducive to supporters tagging along in vehicles.

If such matters to you, spectators are indeed few (the sporadic pockets of coeds were a nice touch), but earn kudos for quality over quantity. Aid station and other course workers are incredibly supportive. In fact, I found most of the law enforcement types providing traffic control quite encouraging as well.

Post-race organization was good, with ample liquid and solid refreshments.

We stayed at the "overflow" Cabot Lodge on North Monroe, which was a good value, sufficiently handy, and quite accommodating with late checkout.

All in all, I'm frankly surprised this race isn't any bigger than it is (though I do note it's growing), but as one who prefers smaller races, I'll not complain.

As a marathon director myself, I recommend this one highly.

I would definitely recommend this race to others! Tallahassee is not what you would call a vacation spot but the weather was nice and the locals were even nicer! It isn't often that I call a marathon fun but this one was. It felt like you were out running with a bunch of friends! The race is small but it was well run and if you want a flat race this is the place. The Residence Inn did fall down on the late check out but the race director was able to correct it and the hotel did everything else well (nice rooms, free shuttles, and breakfast in the morning). I'm sure this race will become very popular!

"Another PR for me!" (about: 2008)

11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This is the second time I've run the half marathon here and the second time I've PR'd on it. The weather seems to always cooperate this time of year and the course is flat. I ran the half in 2005 and I was very impressed with how many more people participated three years later. The post-race refreshments were fabulous and everyone is so friendly. I would recommend this race to anyone looking for a warm(er) weather race in the middle of winter and a real PR course.

Tallahassee is a very cute city to visit for a couple of days - the food is good and it's scenic. Beaches not far away for a longer visit. I'll be back in a year or two for sure!!!
