"Fantastic small-field marathon" (about: 2008)

The race directors do a wonderful job with this race. The course is perfect for a PR; starting and finishing at the FSU track is a nice touch; and the spectators are few and far between, but VERY enthusiastic. I will definitely run this race again in the future; my only complaint was that the host hotel (Residence Inn) was very unaccommodating of the racers and refused to adjust the check-out time. I will choose a different hotel next time around.

This was my fifth Tallahassee Marathon. My wife and I have run marathons all over the U.S. and Europe, but Tallahassee remains our sentimental favorite. The weather and the great club organization make Tallahassee a fantastic experience. Coming from Miami, it's a pleasure not to worry about 80 degrees and rain.

"A Great Marathon" (about: 2007)

This was my first Tallahassee Marathon and it will not be my last. The course was very flat and very fast. The weather conditions were perfect with a temperature of 37F at the start. I ran this race hoping for a PR and a qualifying time for another Boston - and I achieved both. The race director, Jay Silvanima, did an outstanding job with respect to all aspects of the race. Jay and his team of volunteers and sponsors are to be congratulated for a job well done. I am already looking forward to next year's race.

"Must run this race!" (about: 2007)

This was my second 1/2 marathon, and I really enjoyed it. It has made me question my plan to run one of the big marathons with all of the crowds in a few months! The race was very well-organized. The course was an out-and-back, which I do not mind. I loved running on the bike trail. The spectators were few, but enthusiastic. Starting and finishing on the FSU track was nice. Having the FSU bathrooms was awesome! No lines even 5 minutes before the gun! I ran my 3rd 1/2 marathon 3 weeks after this and found myself pining for Tallahassee. Jay and his helpers put on a better post-race feast than a big-city race with a lot more people and much bigger entry fees/sponsors. Kudos to Jay! I will definitely be back. I've even considered delaying my training to do my first marathon in Tallahasse in 2008. My only suggestion: Bigger H2O cups, or throw in another H2O station along the way.

"You should try TALLAHASSEE - you will LIKE IT" (about: 2007)

This is a great little race with about 500-600 total runners for both the half marathon and the full marathon. I ran the half.

Positives:
1. Great check in VERY HELPFUL volunteers.
2. Good selection of FOOD at the end - nice, hot pizza to cookies and bread.
3. VOLUNTEERS at water stations were very NICE with plenty of water and Cytomax.
4. POLICE on the streets stopped all traffic before any runner got near the intersection - you never had to worry about cars. The POLICE were very PLEASANT; they would even smile at the runners.
5. No formal gear bag-check - not needed as there was PLENTY of parking less than 300 feet away from stadium. I left my bag at the check-in table and the volunteer told me not to worry; it would be safe as Tallahassee is not the big city. The gear was right where I left it.
6. Starting and finishing on the FSU track was a great feeling for us amateur runners. I felt like I was big-time coming around the turn.
7. Temperatures were in the low 40's to start, which made for great WEATHER to run in. I set a PR.
8. VOLUNTEERS at check-in, water stations, finish line, and food tables all were gracious and helpful.
9. Out-and-back course allowed for the other runners to encourage the other runners heading in the other direction. It is always nice to see another runner smile at you when you yell out encouragement.
10. Running on the trail made for a FLAT COURSE with trees lining either side. How you can create a flat course in a hilly city like Tallahassee is amazing.

Negatives:
None - Not many spectators, but in a smaller race you get that - everybody on the course was great in calling out each and every runner to make each person feel special.

OVERALL:
I HIGHLY recomend this race it is a quality, well-run event.

"Nice and flat" (about: 2007)

The weather was perfect!! Biggest mistake I made was going out way too fast, which is easy to do on this flat course. Everyone involved with the race did a great job. The tech shirt was very nice but they run small so you might want to size up. I felt the course was good, but could get a little boring due to the fact that it is mostly on a bike trail surrounded by trees on each side. Leave the GPS at home because you will not get a good signal (and thus, an accurate reading). We stayed at the Days Inn right across the street from the campus, so I just ran down to the start, which was great. I would recommend this race; I felt like it is a great BQ. Lots of PR'S and the woman who won qualified for the Olympic Trials. YOU GO, GIRL!!!

"Pancake flat course..." (about: 2007)

Perfect day; very flat course. Starts and finishes at the Florida State University track. A very well marked course. A few miles of streets, then you are on a bike path for the bulk of the race. Pizza and lots of good food at the end. Ceramic plates and mugs for the awards.

"22 Miles of Super Course" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Tallahassee Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

The first two and the last two miles of the course in the city need to be minimized to make this nice race an excellent one. Traffic control and course markings in these four miles was pretty lax - especially at the end of the race when no other runner is visible to follow. The rest of the course is super on an asphalt surface through a wooded area. The start and finish inside the college athletic field was a nice touch. Hats off to the organizers for not running out of refreshments at frequent intervals on the course and hot pizza at the finish! Availability of the college bathroom facilities was a plus, and a regular bathroom at the 10-mile mark was a surprise.

"Small, But Growing!" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Tallahassee Marathon

I chose this race because it offered everything I was looking for: potential for good running weather (it was PERFECT), small field, low-key race, and nice, flat course. The race delivered in spades -- and allowed me to deliver a 10+ minute PR! All volunteers from packet pickup to race day were incredibly friendly and helpful, everything was well organized, and the St. Marks trail had many scenic spots. Personal e-mails from Jay, the race director, were a nice touch. And the other runners were fun, friendly and encouraging to each other, too!

Kudos to Jay and his helpers!! I recommend this marathon to anyone who is looking for a run that is well organized and has that personal touch. If you are looking for a marathon that you need spectators to "get you through," then this may not be the one for you. If you do not need (or want) 26.2 miles of people along the course or running on your heels, then you cannot go wrong with Tallahassee. People need to discover this gem. Go badgers!!
