"Great Views, Poor Organization" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

This has to be one of the most beautiful courses to run in the country. Hills were tough but scenery made up for it.

A few issues with the organization. The lead group after the elite should not be made up of men dressed up in bananas and women carrying babies in backpacks. They were sure to get trampled by the next fastest group on the course.

The expo was VERY disappointing. Having run several marathons/half marathons the expo is usually a highlight of the event. This year it was clear that NIKE wanted all the profits. The expo and Niketown were unbearable. Hard not to anticipate the crowds with 23,000 runners and their family along with general SF crowds. The convention center would have been a much better place to hold a REAL expo.

I ran with TNT and was SO impressed with the number of first timers who devoted so much effort to the fundraising and training. My hat goes off to them.

"Do the half" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

The course was beautiful, especially the first half. That is one of the problems with this run. As an experienced marathoner this is a great course but do the half. This is a charity run so there are many walkers and first time marathoners. If you are expecting a good time, don't. The hills, walkers, narrow course at times will prevent it. So sit back and enjoy the views. The Expo before the event was a joke, too small for the number of people. A packed zoo, so we left with our bib and no perks. The lines were huge for what ever perks that were there. TNT support was great along the race with the exception between mile 18 and 25. The race breaks done at that point. Not enough water stations when runners need them. First aid stations are non-existent. New marathoners were walking and looking for aid or water but organizers had a chocolate handout at mile 23. Go figure. Post race was typical zoo. Buses were a joke unless you were a TNT runner. As a TNT runner, I walked directly on a bus that took me back to my hotel. Non-TNT runners were waiting in a line that was well over 200 yards long. For newer marathoners, I bet they were annoyed that 1/2 marathoners were recognized with same shirt as full. So organization was poor, course was great for 3/4 of the run, and I'd do the half.

"Fantastic Experience" (about: 2007)

This was my first marathon (did the full!) and I thought it was great. It seems like lots of people are complaining, but I don't have another experience to compare it to. Oh well! The necklace is too small so I will be headed to a jewelry store for a new chain. No biggie. I cannot imagine not going through TNT though. What fantastic support, especially for a first timer.

I have run this marathon since its first time (4 times) and this one was just as good as last year. The course is great (didn't mind Lake Merced as it is very easy to run the flat course after the hills), the weather was perfect. I was lucky enough to get into the VIP area for qualifying as an elite so I had a lot of perks (like starting all the way in the front of the race). The t-shirt is really cute this year and finally the right size (previous years were always too big, even when taking x-small). Necklace is very pretty again. As always, tons of TNT support but they also cheered me on so I can't complain...Overall great race, I'll run it again next year.

This is the third time I've run Nike. I love the event and love the course. The terrain is varied and interesting and the views are spectacular. However, each year I am more and more befuddled by the lack of support around Lake Merced. This year was the worst ever. There were 3-mile spans between water stations at the END of the marathon when runners need it the most. Moreover, if you did happen to get dehydrated in this area, there are no med stations either. This seems irresponsible for a company like Nike. I also want to say that I support TNT. It's a great venue for first time marathoners and an inspiring way to raise money. However, be forewarned: if you are an experienced athlete and are running for a PR, it's nearly impossible because of the the large blocks of walkers in the race who block the road.
That said, I like this marathon and I'd do it again.

"gorgeous course but needs better organization" (about: 2007)

I had an 'early start', and had planned on going out running from the start line. Due to number of walkers, did not even begin to run until mile 6. People were asking each other - when do we run? Unclear if walkers and runners were together, separate, and no one checked our ID or badge, despite mega-heavy warnings to the contrary pre-race. Views were spectacular, but hard to weave my way in and out of walkers. I had no problems with water supply, volunteers, or being cheered - I also did TNT. The bagpipes at mile 7, 8 - spectacular! I was super worried I'd be using the bushes, but never had a problem with bathroom accessibility. However, I, like everyone else it seems, hated Lake Merced. No water, no support, ugly scenery, and felt like I needed to worry about cars. Also, no fun running by the sewage treatment plant. Common guys, last thing you want to smell at mile 17, 18.... The expotique and Nike store were an utter madhouse and unbearable, and whatever perks were offered were impossible to obtain due to wait time and general hysteria. However, I'm just happy I finished, I felt supported almost the entire way, and I was prepared for far worse hills, being a native San Franciscan.

So here is the thing...come to San Fran, run a marathon, earn a Tiffany Necklace...all supported by Nike. Unfortunately, the esteem with those names did not carry..Niketown was a disaster and that was the only place you could get stuff (unlike most expos where stuff is online and in HUGE expo areas) and then u share a course with half-ers all the way...this makes for more frustration of hearing 'only 2 more miles!' when I have a whole 15 to go! I found the course to be poorly supported and I expect more from nike and the 'company' it keeps. The necklace was ok...but there were the exact same t-shirt saying Half-marathon and marathon finisher...to figure out how to get my full vs a 'half' that I initially ended up with was a matter of national security. If you want a marathon for achievement support and SPORT, unfortunately, NIKE isn't there yet. I'm experienced in marathoning but this was below expectations.

"beautiful course but some major disapointments" (about: 2007)

2 previous marathons | 2 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 5

This is my second year running the Nike Marathon. Everything was fantastic with the exception of the extreme lack of fluids on the last 6 miles of the course (which is when the marathoners need it MOST) and the lack of Jamba Juice after the marathon. Dehydration! Jamba Juice poorly planned for the event which resulted in running out of Jamba Juice halfway through the event, should have regulated from having spectators not taking the Jamba at least!!!! Very disappointing. T-shirts definitely run very small. Overall, I'd do it again but definitely will continue to give my feedback in hopes improvements will be made for next years events. OH yeah, shuttle lines were very LONG!!

"Average women doing amazing things!!" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I did this race once before in 2005 and I must say; it just keeps getting better. Nike has outdone itself once again. There is no other marathon that makes women feel so amazing and important like this one. This race is extremely difficult but in the end its all worth it; especially for the Tiffany necklace. One piece of advice I have for all those who are excited to try it next year: check out the course ahead of time and familiarize yourself with the hills, so that you know what to expect the day of the race. Always be prepared!! Thanks for everything.

"great run!" (about: 2007)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Considering how many people there were that wanted to, and did run, I thought the organization, the course, and volunteers were amazing! It was nice to see so many making the effort to get out and run for a good cause.

I wasn't part of the TNT, but good for those that were and it was awesome that they had great support.

We had a great experience, and loved the finisher's necklace!
